Postmortem occurrence/state?
What happens after death? You don't have to have an organized religion to answer.

Well Virginia's answer excludes Muslims, Jews and anyone else who believes in God but does not follow "Christ's" path. I believe that even Athiests are not doomed to "hell" because there is not sufficient proof that heaven and hell exists, therefore why should they be doomed to hell for not believing in God; they can't be punished for being overly-rational and choosing not to believe something simply because the majority of the world does. I like the Buddhist view of death better.. the idea of reincarnation seems like an optimistic way of viewing death. I for one, choose to believe in God, not because everyone else does but because I have my own particular reasons for doing so. What I don't believe in is "organized religion" because it enforces man-made rules and is as much exclusionary as it is inclusionary. Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe in the same God, they just give him a different name, and yet they all seem to believe that unless the other group does not accept their views on religion then they are doomed to "hell", which is ridiculous. There can't possibly be one single way of viewing God. That's why I choose to privately believe in God while remaining away from any form of "religion".
I do not know what happens after death, but if there is a heaven I believe that the majority of this world will end up there, everyone has a psychological reason for leading the lives they live. We all start out as innocent beings- a baby is the most pure and innocent living creature- we are shaped by our environment and experiences into who we are today- all these elements are beyond our control, so we can't be punished for taking a certain route, God knows this.
Religion is quite complicated =) I've never understood athiests more than I do now, as I'm getting older.
Sometimes though, I think that death will be just like the time before our birth, we have no recollection of that either. It might be a portal into another "world", awaiting a rebirth...

If you have accepted Christ's atoning work for your salvation, then when you die, your spirit returns to the Lord, and your body remains in the ground awaiting the resurrection. If you have never believed and accepted in Christ's atonement, then when you die, you reside in a place called hell, where you are tormented until the day of judgment. On the day of judgment, you will be brought up out of hell and when your name is not found in the book of Life, which contains all the names of those who accepted Christ, then you are cast alive into the lake of fire for eternity. It has been proven that when a person dies, their body weighs less than it did before death, therefore proving that we each have a soul. That soul will either live eternally with Christ, or eternally in a lake of fire.
