I think they're definitely dying. For one, printing is getting more and more expensive due to rising gas prices and the toll cutting down trees takes on the environment. Also, you can find pretty much anything for free on the internet, so people don't have as much incentive to buy magazines. It costs a lot of money to ship them out to people's homes. And, as I said, it's bad for the environment (killing trees and such), so I'd imagine within the next 50 years or so, they'll be phased out.

I agree the print magazines are waning. Their content is now 75% ads.
As a former subscriber to 6 magazines that focused on my hobby I have stopped all. Just too many ads and not enough content. Much easier to go online and read what interests me.

Yes! I know that a lot of newspapers are feeling the affect. It is their own fault though. A person can read the local news on the internet that the papers actually put on themselves, before the daily paper gets to your door,so why pay over $100.00 a year just to read the comics, when you can even get them for free on the internet.

i have been studying this topic on my uni course :)
with newer MultiMedia platforms such as the internet, people of the dot com generation are moving to the internet to achieve fast, more assessable Information esign uniquely to their interests. yet however, magazines offer escapism, something to do; if im waiting for train im more likely to buy a magazine rather than wip out my iphone (like i could afford one anyway) because i want to physically read something.
its so hard to read long journalism (long worded articles) online as it strains your eyes and its hard to concentrate.
magazines such as vogue, marie claire etc are long standing brands that people buy into, they purposely buy vogue because its vogue. i like to keep all my magazines (even though they do take up so uch room!) to refer back to, they are tangible unlike the many fashion blogs and websites out there.
due to the economical crisis there has been lower sales of the 'cheaper' weekly magazines as consumers are saving their money and investing in the more glossy, monthly magazines as a 'treat' so even in times of low disposable income we still turn to magazines.
so after this really long and probably painful answer lol i reckon that in 10 years down the line you and i and the newer generations will still continue to buy magazines :)
well i hope so because im studying magazine publishing and that's a whole lotta money wasted!

Eisner in the book "Work in Progress", said that there were predictions that books would be gone with the advent of movies. They predicted that movies would be gone with the advent of TV. They predicted that Networks would be gone because of Cable. They finally predicted that cable would be gone because of the internet.
However in numbers at least, the amounts are greater than ever before. The reason is that they adapted to the new market and found their nitch. I predict this is what is going to happen with newspapers.
