How do i teach my dog to fetch? ?

I have a one year old husky and he will not play fetch! He will chase after the ball, sometimes pick it up, but then just drops it and won't bring it back no matter what I do. I thought it was just kind of a natural thing that dogs did, fetch the ball and bring it back. I never had to teach any of my other dogs to do it! Is there a way to teach him to play?

I've had good luck with taking a tennis ball. Slitting it open with a knife just a small bit. You than show the dog a yummy treat and than place it inside the ball. You just squeeze the ball to get it to open. Than toss the ball close and call him when he grabs it. Only give the treat when he brings it back to you. Usually they get it pretty quickly that they dont get the treat unless they bring it back to you.

Well, this is what I did with my 11month dog:

Stayed in a quiet room in the house

Put him on a long leash and held the other end

Showed him the ball, and waved it around so he wanted it.

Next, while I just threw it I yelled "Fetch"

Then, I called his name and grabbed the ball from his mouth, while saying "Give it" if he would not let go, I took the top of his mouth and lifted it from the ball

If he didn't come to me I would reel him in with the leash

I would praise him by rubbing his chest and say "Good boy!" and stuff like that, or once in a while give him a small piece of a chicken hot dog

I kept repeating this procedure until he didn't need the leash

I repeated it without the leash

Then, took him outside and repeated it

I slowly raised the distraction levels until he played great

Now we can play at the dog park with no problem!

When you want to stop playing, just give the ball to the dog and let him have fun

Good luck! And some dogs it takes longer and some dogs it takes less time

Oh ya, my puppy is a border collie so it was funny to see him pounce on the ball!

Some dogs fetch others don't. Huskys are not known to play fetch its not in the breed. My border collie would do the same thing when she was young. run after it and that was about it. Maybe 3 times in her life she brought it back. She is now 14 years old.

I just excepted the fact that fetch was not her thing. She was bored by it. We moved on to other stuff. I taught her how to roll over, wave, stand on 2 feet, jump through hoops, pick things up on command, stay, sit, lay down, speak, heel, come, and a few other things. But she never would fetch.

It's just not his thing. BUT he can learn from watching other dogs.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tr.im/xSjHF

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

dogs can naturally learn to fetch at a certain age, but a year is past that age. so you have to teach him the hard way. the reason he drops the ball it because once you call him to come back, you distract him from the ball.

he runs after the ball, so that's a good start.

teach him to come first. do this by calling his name and grabbing his attention, give him a treat once he reaches you. next, you have to get him to come with a ball in his mouth.start by putting the ball in his mouth and have him do something simple like 'sit'. once he sits with the ball in his mouth, take it out and give him a treat. then give him the ball, take a step back - he should step towards you then have him sit again. take the ball out and give him the treat. dont praise him if he sits without the ball in his mouth. then it's just a matter of backing up more steps while he comes towards you and sits. eventually you will be able to throw the ball and he will know that he only gets a treat if he comes back with it in his mouth.

I read your question and thought about it.Some breeds are not bent to fetch-I have an Irish Setter that pretty much does the same. She is not a retiriever. She does well to find it !being a hunting dog.A huskey is bred to pull and work.A pug I have isn't going to retrieve anything but food!Play certainly-what does a husky like to do? I'll bet if you put a mock sled on him and ask him to pull you he'll do a great job!

if your dog doesn't bring back the stick, just keep practicing and praise it when it does bring it back!
