Anyone still wonder why Powell endorsed Obama?

This in the news this morning: "Obama: Powell will have role as top adviser".

So much for all those fine and moral "reasons" Powell gave.

What do you think?

Update:

People were asking yesterday did Powell's endorsement cause me to "lose respect" for Powell. I answered "no" all day yesterday.

This does.

Update 2:

JMan, I am not, nor have I ever, "smeared" Powell. I am just so disappointed he is only "politics". I thought better of him.

Update 3:

So many Democrats tooting the horn for Powell all of a sudden. Here's what they thought about him not so long ago, from a website they like to quote: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/4/12/...

But now they are "proud" to have his endorsement.

One hand washes the other.

Update 4:

Thank you everyone for your replies.

Powell has ALWAYS been liberal. He only suggested he was Republican for political gain. It is obvious why he endorsed Obama. Powell was vetted by the McCain campaign earlier. Powell contributed the maximum amount to the McCain campaign. Powells son endorsed McCain this summer. Obama and Powell have been in the works about Powell being part of his cabinet after he was rejected by McCain. Bottom line, Powell is liberal, he got burned by McCain(for reasons McCain saw before the rest of the country did) Powell endorsed the black guy. A, to further his political career. B, to be in good standing with the Black community. Anyone with half a brain can see through this endorsement. When was the last time Powell endorsed a liberal, inexperienced WHITE candidate. McCain has the endorsement of 4 former sec. of states and 200 Generals and Admirals

Wasn't Powell the one on TV a few years ago holding up vials of anthrax saying this is why we have to go into Iraq. And isn't Powell the one that convinced the UN to go into Iraq?????

Im A Dem and I always liked Powell. When he left the loony tunes cabinet, I knew crap was gonna hit the fan. Powell has been a Republican forever! If you think he needs Obama your crazy! Powell could have been in any administration including Clinton. Powell is real and always has been. When they wanted to Blow up Iraq he wanted to talk.Cheney wanted the big fight and even Bush wanted some restraint. So, Powell left the mess to them. Now, he hates the Arab claims and the terrorist accusations. Why in the heck is is bad to be a Muslim? When was that ever an issue in American politics? Your dancing around what he said? DId he not ask the question about why they are making statements towards Muslims? I mean why are they? Do you know we have a Muslim general? Muslim Americans serve in the war are they Terrorist? Republicans are pushing lots of people out with there statements!

Is party swapping really that rare over there?

We get parliamentary party defectors every now and then here in the UK and we certainly had a huge number of defections and resignations over Iraq. Admittedly they're rarely as high profile as Powell's decision.

In the end Powell is there to serve the interests of the people, not the interests of his party or the interests of the outgoing president, and he really believes that the war is against the best interests of the people. He has made clear for the past year just how opposed he was to the war so really, it's not that surprising that he'd support the party with the campaign to leave Iraq. Looking at his past views record, I think we could have seen this coming.

But yes I am still surprised at the advisory offer. I think there's been more to this than we've so far heard. But I am more surprised that Powell actually wants more involvement in top government, rather than wondering how he would function amongst a gaggle of Democrats.

Let's dissect this: General Colin Powell, last seen having been thoroughly messed over by an administration it turned out he (like so many of us) had ideological differences with, is hanging around the house, realizing that he'd like a job for the next four years.

Picks up the phone, calls good friend and fellow Republican John McCain: "Hi John, even though the last time I was associated with a presidential administration I was shot down in flames, I'd like to give it a whirl again. If you promise me a gig, I'll endorse you."

McCain, realizing what a horrible burden it would be to have on his team a four-star that is highly respected by the exact constituency he so desperately needs to win, gives a polite chuckle and says, "thanks, but no thanks."

Powell then says to himself, hey, a job is a job, and makes the identical offer to Obama, who checks with his puppet master William Ayers. Ayers says, "hey, he's exactly my kind of guy!" Obama is then ordered by his socialist masters to make the deal.

    Maybe not.

How about: Powell could have a job with any administration elected in this country. He already has seen what happens if he hooks up with the wrong crowd; he has everything to lose by just being opportunistic, and nothing in his previous career indicates that's ever been his play anyway. So, "job offer" doesn't enter into his decision making process at all. Again: he knows he could have a place in either an Obama or a McCain administration.

He gave his reasons why he's endorsing Obama; they make sense in and of themselves. Once he made his endorsement, Obama would be a moron if he did not suggest that Powell would make a great addition to his team.

Powell explained why he endorsed Obama instead of McCain.

In regards to the "new" job, Obama is capitalizing on the endorsement by making public that Powell can have a role in this Presidency. It's NOT that Obama offerred Powell a job for the endorsement.

It looks like Republicans can't handle the truth from a real maverick - Powell.

Don't think so lowly of Powell! Gripes. I'm a staunch Dem, and I'd STILL want Powell as an adviser. And I've always thought that about him. Obama is just reaching across party lines. And so is Powell. Powell thinks, while they might not agree on everything, Obama has the best policies and would be the best man for the job. Obama thinks highly of such an accomplished, educated, intelligent person that he wants him as an adviser.

That is why I don't wonder why Powell endorsed Obama. It wasn't over power. Powell had power under the Bush admin, and he chose to leave it. He is a man of standards.

How hypocritical is it for Powell to be part of the Obama administration when Powell is the one who convinced the UN and Bush to go to war in Iraq!!! This Obama is all over the place with his so called values. The military is overwhelmingly for McCain. Would you not think Powell being a former General would go for McCain. Check out military times for the election poll. http://www.militarytimes.com/news/2008/10/military...

Colin Powell picked Obama because he is the first black American to be so close to the White House. Powell had retired after 40 years of military service, but it looks like he wants to be the grandfather in this administration.

This was something that had been planned and discussed way before yesterday's endorsement. People are ignorant to assume that the only reason Powell would endorse Obama is b/c of a position or race. BOTH candidates had been courting Powell up until his endorsement. If he had went with McCainn, Republicans would be celebrating right now.

A Respected former General and Secretary of State as top adviser-

    OMG-

What next Warren Buffet as The Fed Chairman!!

Unlike Bush it sounds like Obama wants to put quality people in top positions- instead of his cronies

Heck unlike Bush he may even listen to them-
