No space on my boot (C:) drive!?

Despite deleting everything I've ever saved on my computer I STILL get told I only have 5% of free space! (Which isn't even enough to defrag it!!)

I am what is known as a "Silver Surfer" so am rather ignorant of all this technology stuff and would REALLY appreciate any help from you techies out there. ;o)

Update:

Took the advice to download and run "defraggle".

It's been running now for 12 hours and shows it has defragemted 21% of the C boot drive.

Does this sound right to you, or should I stop it and try again or try something else?

(My memory capacity is 58.8 GB)

Aswell as any documents (pictures, videos etc.) - programs take up space on your hard drive. An example of a program is Microsoft Word. So I would also try removing any that you don't need or didn't pay for. You can remove programs by doing this:

    > Click Start on the taskbar

    > Click Control Panel

    > Click Add/Remove Programs

You will then get a list of all the programs installed on your computer (although it may take a minute to load). From here you can uninstall all the ones you don't need by clicking remove.

    ........................................................................................

I would also download and run ccleaner (as bizboy13 suggested) which will tidy your computer up (it's free).

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

    ......................................................................................

Also download DeFraggler which is a better alternative to the defragmenting utility built into Windows (also free).

    .......................................................................

    Hope this helps!

if you dont know how to do any of these, google them.

1, i would start by running a scan disk. open (my) computer, right click on c:\ , proporties, tools, error/disk check. only select automatically fix file system errors' if it asks to schedule, shcedule the scan, and restart the computer, the scan will start befor windows dose.

    2 disable the system restore

    3 disable hibernate

4 lower the pageing file/virtual memory (not too low or you will have problems, if you aint too 'techie' leave this one alone)

    5 download ccleaner and run

6 windows built in defragmenter is hopeless. i reccomend downloading this one, it's free and good, but dosnt defragment everyfile, and tends to get worse after a while because of the way it defragments.

    Auslogics Defrag

but by far the best defragmenter i have found is O&O defrag 10

    or Diskeeper

These 2 you will have to pay for, but they have a 30day free trial (which can be 60 days if you use both after one finnishes!) but i reccomend o&o defrag above the others. but if your lazy, and dont play games (because Diskeeper interferes with a lot of programs since it defrags when your doing things, and slows stuff down) go for diskeeper because it runs automatically.

The latest Diskeeper program has an option to defrag even if you dont have the minimum free space required by the built in. Why dont you check out the trial version/ see the options on the site?

Download JKDefrag, which is better than Windows Defrag and requires no free space to run, simply 'extract all' from the zip file and double click JK Defrag to run:

    http://www.download.com/JkDefrag/3000-2094_4-10701...

Double click the JkDefrag executable and the program starts. There is no need to tell it which drive to defrag or whether to place folders first. JkDefrag will start processing all mounted fixed volumes it finds. It will slowly analyze, defrag and optimize each drive.

Your hard drive may be corrupt, that happens alot. And have you uninstalled useless programs. How big is your hard drive, if it is < 40 gigs that is really small so that may be part of your problem.

If you must you can always reformat, just pop in the install disk for your windows xp or vista or whatever and reinstall it. That will wipe your hard drive clean.

    Do a "Disk Clean Up"

    Accessories > System Tools

    Then download CCleaner

    http://www.ccleaner.com/

    and run that.

Use Add/Remove Programs to delete any programs that you never use.

If you still have problems after that, consider a new hard drive, they are inexpensive and have lots more capacity. Use HDClone or Acronis TrueImage to clone your existing drive to the new one.

you are able to no longer create greater room than the problematic rigidity unquestionably has. additionally repartitioning in residing house windows will erase each and all of the present archives. in case you're out of area get a 2nd problematic rigidity. in case you prefer to velocity up your gadget then get greater reminiscence. yet i've got faith that with 256 MB and an entire problematic disk that the superb difficulty to do is to get a clean laptop.
