Can the gov't "come after you" when you register to vote?

A friend of mine refuses to register to vote. He never registered with Selective Service, and he's way behind on his taxes, so he's afraid that the government or IRS will "come after him" if he registers to vote. Can they do that? Or is that information safe? I need to know ASAP!

Update:

Is there a website or something where I can get info about this?

Update 2:

Oh, and by the way, you don't have to tell ME he's a dumbass. I'm the one giving him a hard time! But at least he WANTS to vote, so he's not a total civic deadbeat. And, he DOES pay taxes-- they're automatically deducted, duh. he just hasn't filed his returns. If not for the penalties, the gov't would have owed him refunds.

They get you for Jury Duty because that is how they select you from the Voter Registrations

He does not have to register to vote, if does not want to but he does have to register with the Selective Service Service.

He could be arrested, face a fine, become not eligible for student loans, get a state/federal job regular loans, state/federal aid or be able to register to vote.

He needs to go register, he can go to http://www.sss.gov/ and register there. He does not have to worry about a draft, since this is a volunteer army, and the draft was suspended back in the 70's.

As for the IRS part, he should file, chances are they owe him money, but he probably has forfiet prior years, unless he works on a 1099 in which case it is his responsibility to file quarterly. And he does owe them money, he might need a tax lawyer in that case

I really don't like the thing with "registering to vote". I'm a Canadian thats immigrated to the US. In Canada, the gvt just keeps track of whos of age by using the SIN number (its the same thing as SSN).

I don't understand why you have to register as supporting a specific party in the US. They never ask in Canada because its no ones business what party you support.

Its like you're signing up so that if either party decides to take over like a dictator, your name is on a list so they can come in and torture you or wipe you out.

Its disturbing. And its not safe. Not even the gvt has the right to know which party you'll vote for. Thats a private matter.

In the Canadian elections, they never know whether you voted, or will vote, for any of the party's. Its totally private.

When you go in to vote, in Canada, they ask for your birth certificate and a photo ID and thats it. Then they hand you a piece of paper for you to go into a private booth to mark. You put the folded up paper, which seals with you close it, into a bin inside the booth. Then you walk out with no one ever knowing who you voted for.

Its so much safer and make so much more sense.

Yes, they can and sooner or later they WILL catch up with him. I know a guy who didn't pay taxes for 17 years and IRS then took everything he had, sold it to recoup their money. Your friend is picking a stupid way to live, always having to look over his shoulder for someone to come after him. You could never really enjoy the fruits of your labor. He ought to clean up his life before it's too late. Tell him to find a tax lawyer to help him do that.

He better be saving up to pay his taxes. If he has a valid SS# and has been employed and gotten a W-2 or 1099, then the IRS can come after him at any time. I think it's best if he moves to Canada.

They can - and eventually will - come after him whether he registers to vote or not. And it's fine that he never registered with the Selective Service. They say you're supposed to but he won't be punished for not having done it. Good for him for skipping that.

Doesn't sound like the kind of person I want Voting anyway. And if he failed to register with Selective Service I think he should be ineligible to Vote. Why should someone that's such a Coward that they would evade the mere possibility that they may have to defend their Country, get to Vote on how it's run? Seriously?

They'll come after you if you don't pay your taxes. You don't have to register to vote in order for the IRS to find you. You can bank on that.

Yes I think they can, that's a good way to bring his name to attention. Though someone that dishonest shouldn't be able to vote anyway. And if that's the kind of friends you have you should take a serious look yourself, but it probably won't matter because my guess you are just as dishonest too.

No he'll be ok. Nice try though. The government is granting amnesty for those people now. He should register to vote and start life anew.
