I NEED HELP...WITH MY DACHSHUNDS!?

I own two finicky healthy dachshunds; male and female. They will be 2 years old in November, and they don't like ANY dry dog food. I've tried many expensive brands and they just don't like it. I'll even mix vegetable oil and an egg and even chicken broth into the dry food. Nope! No go! Does anyone have any GOOD ideas?

I need some food for thought. Got any? Hahahaha Thank you!

Update:

Wow! What great answers. I perfectly understand that the problem is mine. I accept total responsibilty. I guess what I need are some successful food solutions that other Dachshund owners have. Not all dogs are alike. Just as not all humans are alike. I have tried generic brands, Eukanuba, Taste of the Wild, Science Diet, etc. I try to have them eat once a day in the morning. No one else feeds them but me. Walking them is not a problem. We live on a farm. They get plenty of exercise. They are inside dogs and I take them out three times a day.

Update 2:

By the way, I've also tried Orijen and Kibbles and Bits; and the list goes on and on. I need a 100% fool proof dry dog food for... "Dachshunds."

Update 3:

Dear group, I am looking for a DRY FOOD solution. Thanks! (grin)

    honestly.

Stop giving in to their pickiness.

Get the brand of your choice. Offer it at their scheduled meal time.. leave the bowl down for 15 mins. If the dogs dont eat, then pick up the bowl, and offer NOTHING else until the next scheduled meal.

It may take a few days, but the dogs will eat. Hunger will win them over.

Switching brands and mixing food is what causes pickiness.

I have a black lab and she was much the same way when she was young. I just gradually mixed in dry dog food with whatever they're eating now until you have more dry dog food than the other. You might have to end up with a proportioned amount but it will still be cheaper than what you're presently using. Just be careful with some dry dog foods, as some can eventually cause yeast infections from the moisture ingredients contained in the foods. Or at least, this is believed to be one of the culprits in yeast infections in many dogs. If you're not familiar with these types of infections, I was informed by a Veterinarian that they infections will spread from inside of of moist ear and within days spread throughout the entire body. You can expect hair loss, infections from extensive scratching, and other symptoms....Many dogs with shorter ears do not normally acquire these infections as their ears are well ventilated.

well, I buy my dog beneful and she loves it, I also mix a little bit of canned food with it every once in a while as a treat.

But, I've always done this with all of my dogs, and it has always worked. I buy them what my budget can afford, and I just leave it there, If they don't eat it, then they don't eat. They will eventually get hungry enough, and eat.

Try making sure that they are exercised enough, so that they are hungry.

But, I've never changed their food, unless I wanted to. If you keep changing their food, they will get it in their head that they can get anything they want by not eating it, and then you'll never get them to eat.

I would just leave the food there, and if they eat, they eat.

I also free feed my dog (she doesn't have scheduled feeding tmes)

According to how much she weighs, she should be eating 3-5 cups, but she only eats about 1-2 cups a day. But the vet says she is perfectly healthy. So it might just be the dog too.

Also, dry food is the healthiest, wet food is very high in fat, and moist food, doesn't have as much fat as wet, but isn't as healthy as dry.

Buy a can of Merricks food and mix a little in the dry. Haven't heard of too many dogs that can resist this brand. Try the Thanksgiving Day Dinner or Grammys Pot Pie. Have also heard of finicky dogs liking the dry food called 'Taste of the Wild'. Good luck.

Dachshunds can be fussy and cunning. Part of the problem is that those sensitive hound noses detect you having different foods.

I bet they love table scraps? Right?

    Rule One

No tidbits from the table until their food bowls are empty.

    Rule Two

Try mixing dry with wet. Its okay for them to occassionally have human food. Maybe a little beef stew with some vegies for fiber poured over the dog food?

    Rule Three

Feed them first before you eat.

Finally is anyone feeding them between meals?

The neighbours or kids or visitors?

    Dont let them manipulate you!

    Remember they're dachshunds!

The reason dachshunds have a mixed reputation for obedience is because most of them their major hobby after hunting is training us humans to maintain them in comfort and style!

A vet taught me many years ago, a dog will not deliberately starve itself. To get the dogs to eat what you want them to eat, you must be consistent with your training. Put their food down for them, wait 15 minutes and pick it back up. Don't offer them anything else to eat until the next meal time, then do the same thing, place their food dish down for them, wait 15 minutes and then take it up. Most dogs give in and will accept, often even greedily eat the offered food in two days at most. Once they realize you are the alpha, you provide the food they will eat, and refusing to eat will get them nothing, they will eat what you give them. You have been letting them get away with being 'picky' up to now.

Try this method, I promise, it will work. The important things are not to give them anything to eat between meals so that they are offered nothing but the dry kibble, and only give them the limited time in which to eat.

My friend told me something the other day and it sounded kinda of weird but I tried it. She told me to put a little bit of garlic in the dry food. Because dogs like things that have a lot of smell to it. So I started giving my dog some dry food with a little tiny bit of can food mixed with it and I add a little bit of garlic and my dog eats it all. My dog is very picky as well.

Set a specific time and amount of time for feeding (besgt time is right after vogorous exercise or playing) If they don't eat during that time, take it up and make them wait quite a while or even overnight before you feed them agfain. They'll get the idea and start eating, and be glad to get it. A nice doggy TREAT at the end of feeding, along with praise and petting will also help.

PS missing the meal won't hurt! When they get hungry enough, they'll eat, and before long they'll gobble and eat plenty

Dogs tend to like foods that are smelly. I know it doesnt sound appealing but it may work. Try mixing pineapple in w/ the dry food. Also you could warm up the chicken or tuna and mix it very well w/ the dry dog food. I've heard of dog trainers teaching ppl to even put in some smelly spices to lure them in.

Try some of those. Best of luck to you

Quelle(n): have dachshunds and I've done the mixing tuna and or chicken and it worked gr8

They will not starve to death.

Quit being concerned about what they like, and feed what you have decided to feed them.

Feed once a day, (or twice if you must) remove the food after 20 minutes, and leave it at that.

Unless you are determined to be run by your dogs.
