Bushnell and, Boush & Lomb both make excellent products with outrageous magnification.... however, they are extrememly expensive. These are typically used by law enforcement/Game wardens/military and cost anywhere from $1200 to $3000. Needless to say, these are not hobbyist items. There is also a product called a "Doubler" which is an inexpensive way to extend viewing range.

binoculars have two numbers seperated by an X
like 10x50 or 10x25 or 7x30 or even 20x80
the first number is the max magnification so 10x means the item is 'zoomed' 10 times bigger
The second number is the objective lense size in millimeters. In my example, one 10X has a 50mm objective, and one has a 25mm objective.
So they are both 10X zoom, what does objective matter?
Bigger objective means you can look at a bigger chunck of the world at one time, but mostly it is how much light is gathered in. Think about it this way, the normal light from the object is spread out into an image 10 times the size, so it will be 10 times as dim, so you need to catch as much of the light from that object as possible. Of course, the quality of the glass makes a big difference on how much light is lost INSIDE the binoculars, but the bigger lenses allow more light to be caught in the first place.
Also, the bigger those numbers, the bigger the binoculars are.
10x25 are pretty small, but 8x25 are smaller. 10x50 are pretty big, but 12x60 are bigger. You can get binoculars that are so big they are sold with tripods to hold them steady.
7x32 are the most 'average' while 10x50 are probably the most powerful that aren't TOO big, and 10x25 are very compact, and have a lot of zoom, but work best only in bright light.

When looking at any device that magnifies the image that you see through it, the first number listed is the magnification. The second number is the objective lens diameter (the lens on the opposite end of the device you're looking through) expressed in millimeters (7x50, 8x40, 10x50, etc.).
A 7-15x50 designation indicates a zoom capability between 7 power and 15 power.
The "exit pupil" diameter is useful to know as it tells you how well the binocular or scope will function in low light. It can easily be found by dividing the objective lens diameter by the magnification. So, a 10x50 pair of binoculars would have a exit pupil diameter of 5mm.
The pupil of the human eye is 5mm at it's largest diameter, so getting a binocular that has at least a 5mm exit pupil diameter will allow the maximum amount of available light to reach your eye giving you a bright clear image.
All of these things hold true whether you are looking at binoculars, scopes, spotting scopes or telescopes.
Hope that clears up interpreting the numbers you're seeing.
Good luck -

Something you might consider is the fact that as magnification goes up, so does size; a 10 X 50 or so is fairly large and unless stabilized, the image will wobble.
