Hamster skin problem?

My step-son's hamster has two black patches of skin on either side, almost symmetrical, just above his hind legs. He also has a similar patch on his under belly, near his reproductive organs. This appears almost scaly in a way.

I read it could be mites, but I've had a cursory glance at his fur, even using a small microscope, and couldn't see anything. I've heard the mites can be triggered by stress, so if I leave the hamster alone for a few days, would this help? If it is mites, can they jump to humans? (I handle the hamster quite a lot, as does my step-son, plus we have two cats who we have a lot of contact with, so I don't want a huge mite infestation!)

I would take it to the vets. My old hamster had bold patches appear and there are lots of skin conditions. My hamster had to have some antibiotics. If it is mites then leaving him won't help. I would get him to a vet and have him checked.

That sounds like it may be the scent gland. Is it a Syrian hamster? Syrians have them on their hips. It might also be the pigment of the skin.

It's hard to say as I can't see a picture of it. However, if the skin appears irritated that might be reason enough to have a vet look at it. If you did have mites you would have to sterilize the cage with bleach and antibacterial soap.

On male syrian hamsters, at the age of about 10 months they devolop black spots on their hips which are their scent glands. I am not sure about the one under his belly, so I would get that one checked out but your vet. The scent glands appear out of no where, and they are nothing to worry about.
