What would it take to have a legitimate 3rd party?
Most agree that the Democrats are too far left while the Republicans are too far right. Polls show that the vast majority of Americans are in the middle, maybe a little left or right, but get shouted down by the two extremist group on either end of the spectrum.
What would it take for a 3rd party that actually represents this majority middle group of Americans to emerge?

I don't think Democrats are too far left and Republicans are too far right, I think we need radical change, similar to what Ron Paul and Mike Gravel have proposed. We need major overhauls, not "wedge issues" like abortion and gay rights that just serve to make people pick a side.
People think "liberal" and "conservative" and instantly think of issues rather than how they're actually leading our nation. Neither has really stuck to leading in a liberal or conservative fashion, they've both been fairly similar.
I think in order to have a legitimate 3rd party they need a solid platform, even if it's just one issue, such as the environment or worker's right. Once they have some elected officials the other parties will have to work with them to get things done, similar to how things work in European nations.
