does anybody know how to get rid of bubbles on old wood trim?

Question

i moved to an older house that has some wood trim with the original finish on it. the varnish is old and has started to bubble. i have been removing some paint that accidentally landed on the trim a long time ago. in the process of doing this the varnish came off too. now i don't know how to fix it. i have trim now that has almost no finish on it at some spots and then there is the bubbly finish on the same piece of trim...
do i remove the bubbles and refinish the whole thing? and how do i do that?
or does anybody have a better idea?
and yes, the paint has to come off.

I'd probably just replace the trim unless it's worth the time and effort to refinish.  If you want to refinish you can try sanding first, or you can use a chemical stripper  but this is very time consuming and messy.  The problem you are going to run into is knowing what was used on the wood - it could be lacquer, it could be shellac, it could be polyurethane...what you use to refinish it will depend on what is on underneath.  My guess is the bubbling is occurring because the previous homeowner used polyurethane over a shellac or something that was waxy and it didn't adhere properly.

Formbys refinisher . or denatured alcohol and a steel wool. it will quickly, in seconds soften old finish,and melt together the old old finish again. dont wipe all the old finish off.rinse it out in a pot

Get some Nitromors (paint stripper) and work it in with a small hard brush.  Then wipe and wipe and wipe using a lint free cloth and a small paintbrush if there's any hard to reach areas.
