What kind of bicycle should I buy?
To cut gas consumption, I want a road bike for around-town errands and small shopping trips. I'm a tall, somewhat heavy, female, and not especially coordinated, but I have ridden bikes off and on since childhood. Our small town has no bicycle lanes or paths, and the nearest bicycle shop is an hour's drive away. I've check the Cycling section of Y!A, but their answers seem geared toward younger, more fit, more knowledgeable cyclers. I guess I just need a kinder, gentler answer that provides the information that I need -- in English, not in "Cyclese." Any suggestions?

I have ridden bicycles since I was a child. I don't compete, I ride for my pleasure. I am tall, somewhat heavy and almost 60. My bicycle is a 5-speed Schwinn with a comfortable padded seat, handlebars that are wide and bend slightly upward and fat white-wall tires. I've been riding it for over 20 years now. I put a large basket on the front and use it for small grocery buys or garage sale items. The new bikes I see that look comfortable are Beach Cruisers (I think) or similar name. Do not buy a bike with handlebars that force you to bend over. That will make your hands, wrists, shoulders and neck hurt. You and I need to sit upright and be comfortable while we peddle our bicycles. Get the biggest seat with the most padding possible. Be sure it is easy for you to get on and off your bike. I like the hand brakes on my bike but a comfortable bike with coaster brakes would be just as good for casual riding. Fenders on your bike will keep the mud, water or dirt from splashing up on you.
Have fun riding your bike. Be carerful because people driving cars don't give you much room on the road. Never assume that a driver sees you. I'm a big woman on a bright pink bicycle and they seldom notice me at a crossroads. I always give vehicles the right of way.

I have a Huffy Touring Bike.. old fashioned handlebars, bought a better seat for it that protects my back. Only has six gears but has the wider tires so as to alleviate any rough ride. I think they call it an "Old Lady Bike" lol. I also bought a canvas basket for the front. Don't like the wire baskets. Oh and yes, I added the rear mirrors. LOL. Smooth ride but not good for uphill climbs or rough terrains. Bought it at Walmart. The cost, as I recall was a little over $200.

try a motor scooter they get 75 to 100 miles be gallon and may be easier on you than a peddle bike You don't need a special license for a lot of the new scooters.

Look for what's called a "Beach Cruiser." They have fat tires and are easy to control. They don't have gears, so if you live in a hilly area, I don't recommend one unless you are in good shape.
Another type are three wheelers which are stable. Have a large basket to carry things.

i have a trek 7300 which is a great bike -- it is a hybrid and comes in enough speeds to handle any hills in your area = you should be able to get one for about 700 dollars!!! -- p i4ea-
