The position of the former thirteen Colonies in the civil/ Secession War:

New England (or Northern) Colonies:

- Province of New Hampshire (later new Hampshire) : Union

- Province of Massachussets Bay (Later Massachussets and Maine) : Union

- Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (Later Rhode Island) : Union

- Connecticut Colony (Later connecticut) : Union

Middle Colonies:

- Province of New York (Later New York and Vermont): Union

- Province of New Jersey (New Jersey) : Union

- Province of Pennsyllvania (Later Pennsylvania): Union

- Delaware Colony (Delaware) : Union (but a border state)

Southern Colonies (depending on the period Virgina and Maryland could be defined Chesapeake colonies)

- Provnce of Maryland (Later Maryland) : Union (but was a border state)

- Colony and Dominion of Virginia (Later Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia): Mixed: Virginia was secessionist/ Confederate; Kentucky was Unionist but a boorder state and a strong Confederate/Secessionist faction declared secession; West Virginia Unionist, after separated from Virginia

- Province of North Carolina (Later North Carolina and Tennessee) Both confederates, secession only after May 1861)

- Province of South Carolina (Later South Carolina) Confederate and first secessionist state

- Province of Georgia (Later Georgia) Confederate and one of the first group of secessionist state

Vermont and New Hampshire were the Northern most. Maine was part of Mass.
