For Christians that believe blasphemy is the one unforgiveable sin..?
Do you really think that someone say using the holy spirit as an expletive is worse than a guy brutally raping an infant? I know that is an extreme example and i am not trying to be smart. it just has always blown my mind that of all the vile things on this planet to be seen as unforgivable the only one would involve something as petty as pride. Do any of you actually understand the logic behind that and if so could you explain without giving me a bunch of scriptures that simply repeat that blasphemy is bad? It just blows my mind that Hitler can theoretically go to heaven but if a 5 year old decides to blaspheme the holy spirit he can never be forgiven no matter what he does the rest of his life.
For those who have been sincere in their attempts to answer the question, thank you. For those who think telling me what i do and don't understand is an answer, go kick rocks.
I was using the term blasphemy based on:
1) common usage of the term and
2) as i have seen the term used by those claiming to be christians on R & S
Since i don't believe in blasphemy, telling me i don't understand it is pointless.
I do not buy the idea that "unbelief' is blasphemy because one can go from unbelief to belief.
In any case, that whole line of reasoning is deviating from the crux of my question and that is whether you honestly believe that blasphemy (however you are choosing to define it today) is worse than the laundry list of vile things that man is capable of?
Maguyver- i did not mean to imply the child would go to hell, but that if this is truly an unforgivable sin that the child could commit it and never have hope of forgiveness as an adult.
According to one catholic dictionary i referenced this is the definition of blasphemy:
Speaking against God in a contemptuous, scornful, or abusive manner. Included under blasphemy are offenses committed by thought, word, or action. Serious contemptuous ridicule of the saints, sacred objects, or of persons consecrated to God is also blasphemous because God is indirectly attacked. Blasphemy is a grave violation of charity toward God. Its gravity may be judged by the capital punishment on the Old Testament, severe penalties of the Church, and in many cases also of the State for blasphemous speech or conduct. In order for a person to sin gravely in this manner, he must use blasphemous expressions and realize the contemptuous meaning of what he says or does. (Etym. Latin blasphemia, blasphemy; from greek blasph_mein, to speak ill of.)
needless to say I found several different definitions depending on denomination.

The worst thing you can do is to undermine the basis of the religious power structure.

Why an unforgivable sin? ....... to believe in non Christian God. It is not. Not believing is unforgivable? It is not. You may be thinking of a sin against God's spirit. The meaning of what others think the unforgivable sin is contains volumes. For me it simply means a person, on a very deep level, has so destroyed their life.... God can no longer fix it under any circumstance. When does that happen and what would cause it?......... Michelle does not know. He might have a since of humour about blasphemy....... but I doubt it. And with the same fear I have of God about such things, may I point out I know someone who is also very sensitive about being assaulted. [nervously written] Michelle. Edit: Here are the 5 references I know of: Mark 3:28-30; Mt 12:30-32; He 6:4-8; He 10-26-29. And Luke:12: 8-10 that speaks of blasphemy against God's spirit. Remember I do not believe it is a specific sin, but a sin against ones own life. Any number of sins could contribute to that decay, including what you mentioned. For me it means a life has become so rotten, God can not fix it. Michelle

If it doesn't make sense it has been tainted by man. God Is Perfect, Perfect Beings Make Perfect Sense. It is man as a whole that seldom makes sense, not God. You are Forgiven to the degree that you forgive, That's Grace.

I AM agonna' Tell Ya', how you Lose your Right to End Up in Heaven AFTER you Leave this Earth "For GOOD" (what we call "Death").
1. you Never Get Your "Spirit" ReCreated by Asking "Jesus " to "Save" (ReCreate your Spirit) YOU.
2. after your Spirit gets ReCreated, you Ascend Very High-Up into the Spiritural "Realm" (by Following Jesus) THEN get dragged down by "Sins" untill you come to the Place where you Tell Jesus that you want to Sin instead of "Be With HIM (Jesus)"---in other Words---Tell Jesus that you don't Want HIM anymore.
But, it is NOT the Unpardonable Sin UNTILL you do these things First:
Hebrews 6:4,5,6
So There.
(their ain't no kids in Hell, so ForGet that Thought.) ;)

Blasphemy is called the unforgiven sin because it is unbelief in God.
If you don't believe in God...than you don't have anyone you can go to for forgiveness...that's why it is the unforgivable sin.

I don't think that you understand what blaspheme is...in Matthew the Pharisees accused Jesus of using Satan's power to perform miracles...that is blaspheme, according to the bible...not cursing...The context of this passage (Matt. 12:22-37) is essential to understanding Jesus' statement. Jesus had supposdedly demonstrated his divinity by healing the demon-possessed. The multitudes marveled at his power, but the Pharisees (scribes who came from Jerusalem to Galilee, Mark 3:22), unable to deny that miracles had been performed, attributed them to the power of Beelzebul, "the ruler of the demons" (v. 24).
Jesus responded that the accusation of the Pharisees that represented Satan as divided against himself was absurd. Why would the evil one rob himself of his greatest achievement, his triumph over the souls of men? By so arguing, the Pharisees had also entangled themselves in gross inconsistency, since they claimed that some of their own could cast out demons (v. 27).

Question: "What is the unpardonable sin / unforgivable sin?"
Answer: The case of the "unpardonable sin / unforgivable sin" or "blasphemy of the Holy Spirit" in the New Testament is mentioned in Mark 3:22-30 and Matthew 12:22-32. The term “blasphemy” may be generally defined as "defiant irreverence." We would apply the term to such sins as cursing God or willfully degrading things relating to Him. It is also attributing some evil to God, or denying Him some good that we should attribute to Him. This case of blasphemy, however, is a specific one, called "the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" in Matthew 12:31. In this passage the Pharisees, having witnessed irrefutable proof that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, claimed instead that He was possessed by the demon "Beelzebub" (Matthew 12:24). In Mark 3:30, Jesus is very specific about what exactly they did to commit "the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit."
This blasphemy then has to do with accusing Jesus Christ (in person, on earth) of being demon-possessed. There are other ways to blaspheme the Holy Spirit (such as lying to Him, as in the case of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-10), but the accusation against Jesus was the blasphemy that was unpardonable. This unpardonable sin against the Holy Spirit cannot be duplicated today because Jesus Christ is not on earth but is seated at the right hand of God.
The only unpardonable sin today is that of continued unbelief. There is no pardon for a person who dies in unbelief. John 3:16 tells us, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life." The only condition where someone would have no forgiveness is if he/she is not among the "whoever believes in Him." Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). To reject the only means of salvation is to condemn oneself to an eternity in hell because to reject the only pardon is, obviously, unpardonable.
Many people fear they have committed some sin that God cannot and will not forgive, and they feel there is no hope for them, no matter what they do. Satan would like nothing better than to keep us laboring under this misunderstanding. The truth is that if a person has this fear, he/she needs only to come before God, confess that sin, repent of it, and accept God’s promise of forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). This verse assures us that God is ready to forgive any sin, no matter how heinous, if we come to Him in repentance. If you are suffering under a load of guilt today, God is waiting with His arms open in love and compassion for you to come to Him. He will never disappoint or fail to pardon those who do.

to blaspheme the Holy Spirit is to impart evil qualities to Him - seeing as how He is the ONLY Being that can seal a soul unto salvation, that is not an advisable thing to do
