Why Do Christians Imply They Know More ABout Judaism Than Jews?

You would think the experts on Judaism would be Jewish people, particularly Jewish clergy or Jewish theology scholars. Yet, Christians rely on other Christians when it comes to interpretation of Jewish scripture and practices. I think more Christians would at least wonder about the origins of what they believe if they actually knew a little about the religion theirs is loosely based on.

Update:

For clarification, i will apologize if it seems i was implying ALL christians do this. In fact, i personally know two complete sects of Christianity that don't. For clarity, this only applies to christians that do.

FTwasher- Since "the word of God" is going to vary depending on what faith you are, that is not an objective option. The average jewish person is no more an expert on their faith than christians are experts on their faith. However, if I had to bet the farm on the answer about Judaism and had the oprion of asking a jewish person or a non-jewish person, logic dictates your odds are better with the jewish person. Yes, the non-jewish person may know more but it would be *** backwards to assume that.

Jesus Freak - You do realize the irony of you giving me quotes from the new testament abut Judaism? This simply tells me what YOU believe and has no bearing on what Jewish people understand about THEIR faith and traditions.

If you believe X, and you use Book A to prove it. You have to be able to say that belief X is in Book A. Then, the authors of Book A, say, that is not correct, you place the believers in X in a horrible position.

    You are entirely correct.

I suspect, and I can even appreciate, that it must be disconcerting for many Christians to suddenly see us declaring that their 'old testament' is NOT the Jewish bible. Sadly many of them, rather than joining us in discussing the Tanakh, the actual Jewish bible, instead become angry and claim we are simply not 'really understanding' our own scriptures!

To them I say: you only see Jesus in the Tanakh because you start from the false premise that he is there! You read the 'new testament' and then try desperately to retroactively apply what you know of Jesus TO the Jewish scriptures.

But it doesn't work - the Hebrew simply does not support your thesis. There is no reference to Jesus ANYWHERE in the Tanakh. Why would there be? You all know full well that he does not play any role in Judaism!

    JESUS FREAK

    - well, since the 'old testament' is a CHRISTIAN document, why wouldn't you understand it 'better'?

See, you don't even KNOW that the OT is NOT the Jewish bible!

Because if they truly understood what role the Moschiach has in Judaism, they would understand that the Christian concept of Messiah is NOT the same.

One of the underpinnings of their faith, that Jesus was foretold and would have a different role to play, would be gone.

If they understood Judaism, they would understand that there was never a need for Jesus as savior.

And then they would no longer be Christian.

    That's always puzzled me, too.

I've never claimed to know or understand Judaism (though I think I know more than the average Christian, for what it's worth.)

I only go by personal experience, and that has been largely positive in my interactions with Jews. I also note their contributions to science and medicine. The faith does not impede growth or knowledge.

    Errr.. excuse me..

You forgot to add one word.

    **SOME** Christians do.

    Not all.

    Why?

    Because they're stupid.

But I don't think it's fair to imply that all Christians do that , and to imply that all Christians know nothing about Judaism.

    Don't generalise.

    It's rude and offensive.

(Although I understand how pathetic it is when Christians tell Jews that they don't know their own scriptures).

Because they are tangled up in their ego.

The one thing that God wants us to be free off.

Who cares who knows more or less or simply nothing. Will this question bring world peace?

We know their scriptures, it's our Old testament. It seems that because the Old testament/Hebrew Bible fits so well with the New testament which they reject, and it goes so much against some of their beliefs, they must twist the Hebrew Bible out of context

It's crazy, I know. Even when they are shown that their claims are wrong, they still won't believe they don't understand.

Because their Bible (NT) tells them that we are *blind* to the *truth!* It tells them that *Hebrews* are good and *Jews* are bad.

    .

  • I do not believe we Christians understand Judaism itself better, but I do believe we understand the old testament better then they do.

Look at what they say about their messiah. They refuse to see the parts where it says He will suffer. They only look at what it says about Him being King of the Jews.

Quelle(n): The Bible - The only good book! 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (New King James Version) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Psalm 118:8 (New King James Version) It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. Here's a simple prayer you can say: (If you say this and mean it in your heart you will be saved and understand why we believe what we do.) "Dear God I know I'm a sinner, I know I am not where I want to be, and I want your forgiveness! I believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for my sins. Please wash me clean from all sin, shame, and guilt, come into my life Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. I ask this in your name Jesus. Amen!"
