If you loosen up on a line or a rope it is referred to as "cutting slack." If you ask someone to "cut you some slack," you are asking them to back off a little bit, quit being so demanding or strict and give you a little room to move around, afford you a little freedom, allow you to think, to do your job, etc. It means more or less the same thing as "give me a break" with more an emphasis on backing off.

It can be used in many contexts. I believe the song line "with a slack jaw and not much too say" and it refers to having a mouth that will not work. In this case, it means he will not talk much - a bit of a quiet person.

Sometimes it can also mean that this person curses a lot.

This is slack jawed. It usually refers to a hillbilly. I think experto credo probably came closest to the meaning in the song.

Not in reference to the song, but growing up in the southern u.s., you would be standing around with your mouth gaping open, for example, you saw something really amazing and were at a loss for words. For example, you thought you saw an alien, or found your wife in bed with your best friend, and his dog. Sorry, not good on the example stuff....
