So what did he mean when he said that?

I was having a conversation with someone. And we were talking about people who got injured suddenly and their lives changed in an instant...like in a stroke, paralysis...etc.

One of my friends said that he would never like to live that way; that he would rather live a "full life" or "no life" but never a "half-life."

And to that my other friend replied "half-life is not such a bad way to live... assuming you are a Free-man."!!

And all my friends cracked up and laughed. But I don't get it! What did he mean?

Anyone get it? Was it something witty?

    He was referring to the game Half-life (including Half-life two and episode one and two)

    The protagonist is called Gordon Freeman.

    These aliens called vortagaunts call him the "one free man"

    I think he was implying that married men live half a life in a sort of ceremonial amputation.
