How can I get a copy of Win XP Pro off my computer for reinstall?

I'm not majorly computer saavy, but I am bright enough to follow directions.

I bought a shop built computer with XP Pro installed about 6 years ago. When I asked for a reboot disk, the guy said to just take it off the computer.

They offer no "tech support" because it is "a builders shop".

Can you please help me as I need to have a copy because I want to make some hardware upgrades. I don't want to have to buy it if I don't have to (mine is a genuine and registered copy).

Links and any info would be appreciated.

Update:

I checked the validation of my XP and it confirmed as "genuine" and "registered"... so I would like it clarified how the shop "pirated" what is on my computer. (As I slightly suspected).

I have had no problems with it, I just wanted to have it for a reinstall if I needed it, as friends said I should have it. Also is OEM simple to install?

Also, how do I find out if it is in a partition?

It's likely that your OS partition is in it's own drive; for example: when you go to My Computer, you'll find the big partition (C drive) and next to it another drive, possibly a D drive with an additional description, such as Dell or HP or Sony - this usually is your OS. You can make a backup copy of XP from there with a DVD if your computer has a DVD burner. Otherwise, it's going to take a BUNCH of CD ROMS.

Often, the brand of computer you use will provide a proprietary system restore and a way to back up everything, so you may want to do a search for that option in your system help.

A bit late to turn the shop in to Microsoft for piracy. The easiest route might be to buy a copy and save hassle.

You do not have the media to install on a new system, but you should be able to upgrade some of your hardware without tilting the activation. Try to keep your network card at least. Actually the system will probably reactivate over the Internet since it has been quite a while since the first activation.

if your hard drive has the recovery partition you can rip it from that, other wise there is no way to get it off your pc thats a security issue microsft built into their software other wise people rip off micorsft worse then they do

if you want a copy legally buy it

if you have a COA number borrow a copy from a friend and load it or contact micosoft as they have oem disks that will be available or if your system can accept it load vista
