Shorter life time of HDD when in vertical position?
I hear from many people that their external HDD fail. Since the are often in an vertical position, could it be the cause for the failure since maybe ste axis of the discs inside equally stressed by this?
I also wonder whether it reduces the life time of HDDs if they work in an upside down position.

External hard drives have a higher rate of failure because they don't spin down when inactive, like internal drives do.

If you look at the spec sheet from the maker, it will advise which axis it can be installed in for optimum performance. All are vertical and horizontal. It makes no difference. There is no reason they will not work upside down since it is horizontal. Have test run units hanging from cables for months as well as laying upside down in the bottom. Never had a problem. Overall some disk brands simply are better quality than others.

They have done studies and they really cannot find any real evidence to suggest this.
