Male or female dog?

My husband, our daughter (10 months old) and I are going to get a dog and a cat.

Is there any difference in character between male and females dogs or does it depend on the individual dog alone?

Is male/female for example needier, more of a cuddler, likes kids better, etc.?

Should be get a male or female or does it just not matter at all?

i have had both types of dogs, i prefer the female they seem friendly compared to the males, and they don't pee on everything when you take them out for walks.

The first answerer is correct in that males may be more aggressive and not as affectionate, but there are other factors that determine temperment--i.e., breed, history of dog/socialization, age, etc. I definitely would get a younger dog since your daughter is still an infant; this way, you still have more of an influence on the dog's socialization. Neutering a male helps keep his behavior in check; the absence of testosterone will eliminate certain aggressive tendencies.

Two years ago, I got a male pup--about four months old--from a shelter. He was part lab (a plus b/c labs are so easy going), but because I was not sure of his history, I immediately put him in puppy training. He is 90 lbs now, and probably the most laid back and easy going dog I know. And he is a BIG time cuddler.

I always had male dogs, until I adopted my female Sibe. I have found her to be more loving than my males. She's definitely more of a cuddler. I also own a male Sibe and he's more likely to lay down on the floor, while my female will be next to us on the couch.

I don't know if it's the breed or not, since I've only owned huskies.

I've had both male and female dogs. I find them to be almost the same, it really depends on the individual dog. My male dog likes to be petted on as much as one of my females. One of my females is more aggressive than the others, even though she is not 'alpha dog'.

It depends on the animals individual character, and the breed of the dog. I find golden retrievers are generally good for small children and are good with other animals, such as cats. I know that my retrievers get along well with my cats.

Doesn't really matter. It's the individual dog.

Never choose a dog on looks or breed. Find the BEST MATCH for your situation and lifestyle.

Each dog's needs and personality is different.

Go to http://www.petfinder.com/ and talk to rescues and shelters. Discuss your lifestyle, needs and work with an adoption counselor to find the best MATCH for your household.

Example, example housebroken and good with kids.

Some rescues are run from foster homes, so they know a lot about each dog.

    Talk to several.

For young children it is better to choose an adult where you know the personality and know they can handle kids. With a puppy, you have no idea what the personality will turn out to be, and puppies can be mouthy with kids.

A puppy is also a huge amount of work, and can't be left alone a lot.

NEVER buy a dog from the pet store, or classifieds, or websites. Those are the puppy mill puppies. Big trouble!

    See http://www.stoppuppymills.org/

Also remember that caring for an additional dog can be expensive- food, medical treatment. Make sure your budget allows it.

I have a female shih tzu, who is wonderful. She is one of the family , vacations and all. She is however protective of us when we are at home, never has bitten justs warns. She was a breeze to potty train outside, No puppy pads or papers. Very loveable and calm. My male is a whole new story hiper, so active, cry baby, wants to play all the time and barks. They are so different. Not sure if you getting inside or outside dog. I recommend **** tzu, Yorkie or Maltese as far as smaller dogs. Boxers are great! They have great personalities, very smart to. German Shepard or Retriever.

males tend to want to fight and be more dominant but females dont really care whos boss aslong as they get heaps of cuddles)

when you get a dog and a cat , ask the shelter or rescue or pound for a cat friendly dog , and a cat thats ok with living with dogs.

I'VE HAD MY SHARE OF DOGS FEMALE AND MALES.

FEMALES ARE MORE LOVING THEY STICK TO THEIR OWNER AND IF PEOPLE COME AROUND SHE PROTECTS THEM LIKE IF YOU'RE HER BABY. THEY ARE INDEED BITCHES THEY CAN BE MEAN BUT TO THOSE WHO SHE DOESN'T KNOW.

MALES ARE COOL BUT I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEM CUS THEY MARKED THEIR TERRITORY EVERYWHERE AND I JUST HATED THAT ESPECIALLY IF THEY WERE INSIDE. THEY'RE TRAINED DOG BUT STILL MARKED THEIR TERRITORY. ALSO THEY GET MEAN IF THEY DONT GET LAID HONEST TRUTH. OR U CAN CHOP CHOP THEIR JEWELS OFF LOL THEY CAN BE MEAN TOO BUT WHAT REALLY MATTERS IS THE WAY U TRAIN THEM TO BE.

DONT GET ME WRONG BOTH ARE LOVING ANIMALS THEY LOVE TO PLAY AROUND BUT THE MALES HAVE A LITTLE MORE ENERGY THEN THE FEMALES FROM MY OWN EXEPERIENCE MAYBE I JUST HAD SOME LAZY FEMALE DOGS LOL. I PICK A FEMALE THEY'RE BITCHES THEY CAN SNAP WHEN U LEAST EXPECT IT OF COURSE TO THOSE SHE DOESN'T KNOW AND THEY DON'T PEE ON UR STUFF. WELL UNLESS IT'S LAID FLAT ON THE GROUND LOL.

it depends on the dog and the breed. In either event, he/she should be fixed. Fixed dogs tend to be better pets in general

the only thing is that males tend to mark their territory everywhere. aka peeing all over the place
