Has McCain ever said his vote against the MLK holiday was a mistake before his speech yesterday?

Actually that vote doesn't bother me that much. MLK was a huge part of civil rights but he wasn't the only part and there are a few other people that should be equally recognized. Thurgood Marshall chief among them. Why can't they just have a civil rights day like they do a president's day? It seems ludicrous that we recognize MLK's birthday but not any of our presidents. We lump Lincoln and Washington together.

Actually, he did support an MLK day for Arizona.

He just has no particular convictions, I guess.

Granted, I think his vote against the holiday was due to cost, not racism, as Congress scaled back Lincoln and Washington's holidays to a single President's Day.

Yes he did right after he voted against it. It would end up costing the state millions if he approved it. And Arizona already had a Holiday that combined other presidents day with out costing rhe tax payers more money.

Reba K. is spreading mis information, or rather maybe "missremembered". You obviously did not grow up in Arizona and spend most of your life there when this was on every newcast and newpaer in the state.

He was right the first time. MLK may be important to american history, but he is not the most important american. The holiday should be called Civil Rights Day. Washington, Franklin, Sam Adams, and Lincoln were faaarrrr more important to us than King will ever be. If those men don't get a holiday, why should King?

no longer in elementary terms did McCant yet others like him voted against MLK holiday. yet who care, we've been given the holiday besides. you are able to take it or circulate away it. Black people are attentive to how others experience approximately MLK Day. they are able to call it in spite of they like. we will triumph over!

I have never head him say it before. How can anyone with any amount of compassion or empathy not want to honor Martin Luther King for what he did to help Blacks?

Martin Luther King knew that he was a target for assination, but he continued to do his work regardless.

When McCain drank Bush's koolaid, I quit respecting him, and now knowing this I do not respect his ability to make decisions on any level.

Quelle(n): Years of McCain watching. I used to think he was interesting.

Yes beginning back in 2000 during his Senate campaign and at least 10 times since.....old news

He was right in the first place. Even if he was a great man, it doesn't even come close to deserving a holiday. That must be a white guilt issue to equate that to racism.

His people claim he did, but he voted against the holiday more than once.

At one point, the was the ONLY Senator voting against it and was brash about it. (He has friends who go to all white male clubs.)

Some said was great distaste for him to apologize on the anniversary of the assassination in order to win votes to become President of the US.

No. He said it yesterday because he wants the black vote. He was the very reason his state was the last to come on board concerning the King holiday. Most blacks will not vote for him anyway and so it was no use for him to even mention it.
