Why are socialists calling themselves liberals?
I just wonder how historically and in other ways these nowadays called "liberals" call them liberals - for me liberals are free-market advocated (e.g. Adam Smith, Ludwig von Mises ...) and it pisses me off that I have to call myself libertarian since I totally disagree with these looneys like Obama or Edwards.
So why the **** these people call themselves liberal? I simply don't get it.
@ Peanut - not that's the destinction nowadays I was pointing out - I wonder just how come that e.g. in the USA the term liberal means rather socialist that free-market advocate.
In Australia for example the liberal party is a conservative one and in Germany the liberal party is in favour of the free market in comparison to others.

No - woolly Americans who oppose the present extremist administration either call themselves liberals without understanding the meaning of the word, or are called this by drunken rednecks as a term of abuse.
If you mean your Democrats, some of them - perhaps the best of them - are social democrats, maybe a very few are socialists, more simply want to get their noses in the trough - rather like the New Labour crooks here.
Liberalism, properly understood, is an economic creed of the extreme Hayekian right, both on your side of the pond and ours. It is diametrically opposite to socialism, and 'liberals' regard both socialists and social democrats with hatred.
In this sense, Blair, Brown and Muff are all 'liberals'. Muff, however, is also an imperialist. One or two political theorists have compared the politics of Thatcherites here, and Republicans on your side, to Bonapartism. Which is quite interesting if you think about it!

Libertarian and Liberal are different words with different meanings. Liberals favor liberal proliferation of government. Libertarians are for personal liberty and minimal govt.
