what do you think of this article about free speech?

Free Speech Has a Price, by Rubel Shelly

The brilliant founders of the American republic set in place the

explicit provision for freedom of speech with the First Amendment to

the United States Constitution. Against the restrictive laws of

England, they were determined to allow free and unfettered public

discourse about government, public policy, and the officials in charge

of the general welfare.

From that beginning point, we have evolved a shallow concept of free

speech that is invoked for the most worthless of causes. Pornography,

religious hucksterism, racist literature, homophobic web sites -- all

appeal to their freedom of speech to malign, exploit, and dehumanize

people made in God's image.

Yet the stark and honest truth is that our freedom of speech has been

purchased at a very high price. There was not only the blood of early

patriots but that of their heirs as well. That is a high price to pay!

Update:

so shouldn't that mean, since it cost the lives of many, that free speech should be whatever builds the other person up- free to speak into someone words of love and truth?

Update 2:

no, I do not want to make anyone believe my faith if they do not want too, I just feel that everyone should have a right to share, without being ridiculed for it- if I was actually sharing hatred then I would be wrong

Update 3:

Ptah- you just proved my point

Update 4:

be honest- thanks you understood what I was trying to say- everyone no matter what side of faith you are on should be able to share truth- however in love

Update 5:

be honest- I read your answer again- and I just want to add- speaking truth in love is telling the truth about things that are unjust

I know exactly what you are saying and you are correct.

Either we ALL Have a right to speak freely or none of us do.

That is only fair and constititutional as well.

To allow someone to speak freely about racism and athiest and even about muslim teachings, and then say that a chrsitian cant respond with their opinion, is not only wrong, it is ridiculous.

I used to work at a place where you couldnt even pray in private with somone, you couldt talk about God , or your church or any of it.

YEt I would have to sit at the lunch table or at break time and hear all of them run God down, speak such vulgar racism, and preach their own type of god. ONe gal was even into witchcraft, and she could talk, freedom of speech. But my boss was on us few christians all the time saying they threaten to sue when we talk about God.

I finally let him have it one day. I said, this is reverse discrimination and I am sure religious liberty would love to battle this issue. If I have to hear them talk about their god, their hatred of Christiantiy, then they will always hear what I say about GOD of the Bible. HE says you cant, or I have to fire you I said well if you know who Jay Sekulow is with a giant ministry, like aclu, but they fight for Chrsitians, then you will know once they get ahold of this the war is on. HE would just say to damper it once in awhile. WEll they never dampered any of their speech. and no he didnt fire me, but I think he hoped I would quit, and eventually I did.

Got married again and moved away.

But you cant silence a Christian while giving every other group the right to free speech.

Tho I believe we arent to make fun of each other and any of them, we are to respect each other . But if you can speak of your lack of religion and run down my God, I will always be able to stand and defend my God.

Just how it works out. God is behind me, and so is religious liberty. They are on Christian tv, if anyone ever needs them.

I agree with the article for the most part. Many people do use free speech as an excuse for ridiculous reasons. I agree that freedom of speech was hard won. We should respect each other and speak the truth within the bounds of free speech, not spew hatred, or racism, or useless ideas.

Some people forget that the Bill of Rights was meant to limit government, but not the people. Just because the government can't stop me from saying "I hate your *********." doesn't mean that you can't toss me out of your home after I have said nasty things about a person you love. This is yahoo's site I do not like some of their policies but if they want to censure me that is their right. It is my right to find somewhere else to speak.

Another thing we forget is the 9th amendment which says that the constitution can't be interpreted in a way which would let my rights take away your rights. For example People have a right to private property, I have a right that allows me freedom of speech but that right does not permit me to force newspapers to print what I say.

Never mind the constitution of America, God gave us free speech/ free will, if one chooses wrongly they can see that it is and was disapproved of by God who knows better!. ( despite Priests and the like who go against Gods words ) our (believers) battle is a spiritual one through which Satan has deceived mankind he and his Angels and Devils have sought to make all things good seem bad and visa versa through confusion!. free speech is going to be used by good and evil all of the time!.

They did not die so that we could all run around being sweet and sappy, they died so that we could all speak truth, wherever we may find it. If, according to your question, we are only free to speak love and kindness, then who would witness against the murderes of society? Who would stand up against the wrong doers that are in powerful position? No, they died so that we can be free to speak NEGATIVE things. North Koreans live in the type of environment where you can only speak niceties about the powers that be, I bet they would give their lives to allow others to speak truth!

I believe that there should be an expansion of what is pornography and that all of it should be eliminated. Instead of calling a person a threatening string of expletives, which is akin to using a wheel chair when you are capable of running, writers should show how the other person is wrong. Expletives are the precursor of violence. Unless a person signs his name, slander and libel, should not be published. Cowards should not have the same influence of mature adults.

"Against the restrictive laws of England, they were determined to allow free and unfettered public discourse about government"

    How things have changed.

And I disagree. America seems to have a ridiculous obsession with identifying freedom of speech with those that died to defend it. Fair enough, but then you claim that because of the high price of free speech, it shouldn't be cheapened by letting it be used. Which is ridiculous. Millions of Britons died for our freedom, but we don't then restrict it in their name.

I'm reading into your post that you want a free and exclusive pass to bother people with your faith.

People make their own conclusions. Some are hasty, some take years of reflection and study.

Your right to speak ends at my ears. I do not have to listen, nor do you have to listen to me.

No. Free means free, not free within certain parameters.
