NASCAR tire situation?

Should NASCAR get more tire companies involved or does Goodyear have an exlusive deal with the Frances. Hoosier tried a few years ago but did not make it.

NASCAR has an exclusive deal with Goodyear until 2011/2012. The reason that NASCAR will not allow other tire manufactures to compete for their business is safety reasons. They fear that tire competition will produce safety issues as manufacturers will produce more competitive tires to gain driver/team approval.

Hoosier was kicking Goodyear's butt at some events. If another tire company came into Nascar, Goodyear wouldn't be able to hang. Hoosier tire is a pretty small company to be able to put the hurt on Goodyear the way they did. Firestone would do to Goodyear what they've managed to do in other series - make them leave.

Nascar should allow more tire manufacturers when there deal with goodyear ends. Goodyear just can't seem to get it right anymore. How hard is it to build a tire with a lot of grip and the dependability to run 30-50 laps,?, road race tire manufacturers seem to do it quite well.

I'm neutral on this. Part of the time I think: stick with Goodyear. They seem to be trying to get it right. Obviously a "miss" was Atlanta but after Smoke's tirade and others who voiced displeasure apparently Goodyear stepped up and went to work on the problem so we don't see a repeat at Texas (we'll see...).

Then part of the time I think: competition is good. Open it up to those companies who are responsible enough to take the issues of racing tires seriously. As I've said before: bidding on tires is not something I'd like to see because you get accountants who are counting beans and wanting to go with "low bid" which more often than not means what you are getting is inferior. But if the $$$ side of it was not on the table, just tire reliability, durability, safety, etc., and there was a way to evaluate the differences, then I would favor other companies being involved. This issue is definitely a two sided coin.
