pentium 4 to dual core switch?
i have a compaq evo tower computer with a 2.4 ghz pentium 4 in it. could i possibly switch the p4 processor with a dual core? if so how?
i am about to put in a much more powerful power supply. so power requirements are not an issue. i would just like to know if it could be done.

Assuming they are both using 775 Socket, I would still say the chance of it working would be about 20%, you should look up the chipset of the motherboard in the system, and see if it supports Dual Core Cpu's.
A program like CPU-Z should be able to tell you what kind of motherboard you have, but if you want to know forsure, you should open the pc, and look around the motherboard and you might see a description of it somewhere.

First off, I would like to tell you that the new Intel core2duo's use much less power than the original pentium 4's. You do not need to worry about your power supply.
Next off, I would like to tell you that, although the pentium 4 cpu uses the same socket as the intel core2duo, your motherboard chipset may not be compatible with it.
What you should do is call customer service at compaq, and ask about the chipset of your motherboard for your specific model. Also ask them if the core2duo is compatible with your motherboard's chipset.
