While on your way to St. Ives

you saw a man with 7 wives

Each wife had 7 sacks

Each sack had 7 cats

Each cat had 7 kittens

Kitten, cats, sacks, wives

How many were going to St. Ives?

Update:

I figured it would take a little longer than this to get the right answer.

Oh well, I’ll come up with something more interesting next time. : -)

Many of you answered almost on top of each other (in fact the order I receive the email indicators is different than the order here). That being the case, I’m going to go with L & O’s mommy as best answer since she was first to get correct number and also explain who was going to St. Ives in the answer.

    None, quite possibly. The story begins 'As I was going to St. Ives', which is in past tense. So the speaker may well have finished his journey before this question is posed. As the question is in the present tense (it asks how many 'are' going) the speaker should not be counted if his journey is already complete. Of course it's possible that any number of people and animals are on their way to St. Ives, but none are confirmed in your rhyme.
