Anyone any experience of the Atkins Diet?

I'm 51, a bus driver and getting fat, so I'm not enjoying my mid-life-crisis! A friend has lost 2 stone in 2 months on the Atkins, any suggestions on your experiences?

The Atkins diet is really not very healthy at all. What I would suggest you do is first don't change your diet at all but add exercise to your day. 30 minutes a day of brisk walking for 5 days a week to start.

Then, after you've done that for a week, make some gradual changes in your diet. Here's an article about low carb diet plans that will help you pick out the diet that will suit your lifestyle best. http://www.healthy-living-for-moms.com/low-carb-di... .

Congratulations on making the right decision to get healthy!

Yep, it'll work, but gets very tiresome after awhile. Nobody sticks with the Atkins for very long. But, that's true with any "diet." Give it a shot, but follow the instructions carefully.

Lifestyle change is the only long term solution to health and weight control.

    Proper nutrition(not Atkins!)

    Exercise

    Calorie management

this diet works but only if you are prepared to stay on it for quite a long time. do it for a month and you will lose about a stone but if you can't stick it any longer (believe me it's hard) and go back to eating carbs the weight won't be long coming back. the choice of food is very limited and even though it sounds great to eat bacon and eggs for breakfast the novelty soon wears off it you can't mop up your runny yoke with some lovely bread. if you're a person thats fond of potatos bread and anything with sugar it's not for you

It does work, but it makes your breath stink and you get mega headaches coming off the caffeine. Problem is that the weight goes back on quickly - like every other high profile diet. You get really impressed with the initial weight loss, but that is almost exclusively water - then the loss slows down dramatically and you begin to lose faith. The idea of eating as much bacon & eggs etc as you like sounds appealing, but it's amazing how sick of it you get in such a short space of time.

Quelle(n): I have tried many, many 'fad diets' the only one that works is 'eat less, excercise more'. You will be happier, the weight loss will be slower, but you will tend to keep the weight off. At your age it is tough to lose the weight because of your metabolism slowing - I know - I'm 46 & it's the same for me.

Yes, like any other diet it works if followed properly. It also works well by not making you feel hungry all the time. The drawback is that there are some foods that you just cannot eat. Some people find it makes them ill but I ´m not sure why.

yes I have done the diet and it works great as far as losing, but it is really hard to stay with after a while. Then if you go off of it you will gain back what you lost plus. It is best to to try eating more good {carbs} and staying away from fat and sugars.

Yes, 3 days in hospital with a blocked bowel!!! My husband did well on it, but cant do it now as he suffers with gout and he cant tolerate a high protein diet. He lost 3 stone - but found it hard going.

It works well, but it is hard to adhere to and it is hard on your liver (all that extra protien and gluconeogenesis from lack of carbs). It's a good way to take off 10-15 pounds, but once you restart carbs you are likely to loose all the benefits you gained, AND at 50 years old you have to be careful not to add too much fat to your diet in the process.

Yes it really works but is hard on your system, so be care full.
