Meaning of Hindustan vs. India?

Can anybody explain the difference between saying "Hindustan" and "India"?

Is there a difference or do you use it as synonyms.

Shukriya

Update:

Thanks to all of you. That is a difficult question, as I see. I would like to learn more...

Good question..... most ppl take it that Hindustan had some religious significance to its name.. this is not the case.... thsi name cane be traced back to our Indian history.....many of the Aryans used to live along the Sindhu (Sindh) Valley, these people had established a civilization of their own... so these people were referred to as "Sindhu's"...this is where the word Hindu derived from.... and hence that part of the Sindh Valley was named Hindustan ('stan' meaning land). So that is the history behind the word Hindustan...however I believe that today we should probably use Bharat or India simply because this could avoid conflict between people in our country.

P.S. i learned the above info from one of my university profs so i guess its reliable...unless the prof was a fool.

It is the same really. Hindustan is the Indian name. It doesn't necessarily mean Hindu as in a person who follows Hinduism. Hindu used to be just a word for any Indian person, regardless of religion.

SOME people use the term to imply that India should be an India only for Hindus. But most people use it to simply mean India.

Hindustan means a place where people who believe in hinduism live and India is just the name of the country. Hindustan refers to the religion of the place.

Sorry if my answer is wrong. As I have learned in books . Bharata means brave. The child lived in the forest playing with wild animals. King Bharath was a brave king and the country said to be named after the king's name

There are certain words that mean "Place where X adherents reside".

If there is an area where a large majority of people adhere to a certain religion, historically people would call that place based upon the religion. Today, the world is becoming so mixed up that its not as practical to do such.

Christendom = Place where lots of Christians live.

Islamibad = Place where lots of Muslims live (concurrently its the capital of Pakistan).

Hindustan = Place where lots of Hindus live, etc.
