US resident overseas?

I am a US resident married to a US citizen. My husband received orders to work overseas. His orders include his spouse. Upon arrival n Germany I found that a US green card and oders do not mean a thing when you are looking for a job with the military communiy. They force all US residents to register in Germany and then treat them as local nationals. Is this really legal to disregard the US residency completely?

Update:

Just for eparsons: I am sponsered but nobody cares. If you are not a US citizen you are treated like a local national. There is no choice. I just want to know if this is really legal.

If your husband was unable to "command sponsor" you through the military, then yes. If by some chance you registered with the German government as a resident of Germany you no longer have the ability to apply for MOST jobs on military installations. However there are very few that local nationals can apply for. They are generally cleaning crews and/or kitchen assistants at dining facilities. Contact your local CPO (civilian personnel office) for more clarification and possible job opportunities.

Hmmm... If you are command sponsored then there honestly should be no issues with you applying for any position an "regular citizen" can apply for. The only other suggestion I could possibly give would be to talk to the JAG office of your husband branch of military and explain to them the situation. As far as I know since you have an ID card and are command sponsored then you fall under the SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) between the US and Germany. Under that I believe you are entitled to the same privileges as anyone else.

My opinion is that you are getting the run around. Please update me as to how it works out if you would.

Quelle(n): I made the mistake of getting a German residency permit for a contractors position on Ramstein, AB and can no longer apply for any positions unless they are a contracting position or the ones stated above.

your nationality in any country is not american, so they will not treat you as such,

if you were sent there by the military consider applying for citzenship... i know the laws for people married to military spouses are different

but even though you went with you spouse, does not entitle you to the same treatement, because you are still a citizen of another country... The US has not say over how they treat you either, they only can do anything if you are a citizen

talk to the people your husband works for in the mean time and ask for help

Then, I should move to Germany, because I got a nice job in Switzerland and the swiss did not approve the work permit, because I was American...just like that!

And, the company that hied me had to let me go....

P.S. I'm an Italian resident. It did not count..even if I live near the border.

Your dealing with the military.....complain to base commander , then move up the chain of command..

if your husband is civilian or military?? make direct complaint to US authorities.....go to embassy ..

as far as regestering...all US embassy's want that....to help keep trackof whom is in the country .....

Must always remember you are a guest in a foriegn country....
