High speed internet access?
I am interested in upgrading to a high speed connection (I have the dreaded dial up currently).
Several questions:
1. DSL versus cable- what's the difference or is there?
2. When comparing providers what should I look for (aside from price?)
3. Are there any websites that tell you which providers work well in your area?
4. Does anyone use Verizon and what are your thoughts? (I'm in the NYC area if that matters)
Please use non-techie language as I'm still a rookie in this area! Any other info on high speed connections would be helpful.
Thanks!

DSL is through your phone line, not a wireless signal - not sure what the first answerer is talking about. No matter which connection you have, you can get a wireless router and use a wireless connection to your computer or you can have them wired directly to your computer from the modem. It's really not difficult - the paperwork that comes w/the modem will explain.
We've had both, and while the cable is a little faster than DSL there isn't so much of a difference that it was worth paying the extra 25-30 bucks a month, so we just "downgraded" back to DSL recently. My suggestion would be to check around and compare prices and ask your neighbors what they have and how reliable either one is. Not sure about your area, but here the cable companies are always running promotions that make the price pretty comparable to DSL for the first 6 months or so, but then it JUMPS after that - if you can get a low price and it stays that price, I'd go for that one over the promotional pricing, but that's JMO. Good luck

1. DSL connects to the internet through a wireless signal and cable does not. What this means is that when it storms or there is any interference your connection will be severely impaired if you use DSL.
2. Good customer service.
4. Can't answer this one.

I would go with the one that's willing to give you equipment for free (modem....possibly router). Can't argue with free.....

Satellite would be your only option.
