The engines, it seems, were not as long-lasting as the bodies. Also, the entry level models had manual transmissions, which makes them even more appropriate for EV conversion. One of the members in my EV car association did a Saturn and with 120V/DC motor, he gets 40+ mile range on a charge and drives it every day. See links.
