Which car sold in America is the smallest/lightest?

In the 70's many of the Hondas, Toyotas, and VWs were used to make conversions into electric cars. I am interested in 90's and newer cars to convert.

Update:

I am interested in converting one to electricity myself. I am looking for the lightest (smallest) minus engine and associated parts... not to buy a new "eco-car".

Update 2:

Thank you both JD Powers and Terry. The JDP list was just the info I needed... and Terry, I appreciate the new links to peruse.

I wish I could give you both "best answer".

One of our associates suggests that you might consider some cars from the ‘90s because they certainly are small/ and economical and might be good candidates for a conversion to electric: These models may be hard to find but here's a good starter list: Geo Metro, Dodge/Plymouth Neon, Ford Aspire, Hyundai Scoupe, Kia Sephia, Mazda MX-3, Mitsubishi Mirage, Saturn SC, Suzuki Swift and Toyota Tercel. We hope this helps you with your eco-project.

Great post from JD Powers. I concur, in particular, that the Saturns are a good choice. Having plastic body panels means many of them are rust-free even after so much use. The engines, it seems, were not as long-lasting as the bodies. Also, the entry level models had manual transmissions, which makes them even more appropriate for EV conversion. One of the members in my EV car association did a Saturn and with 120V/DC motor, he gets 40+ mile range on a charge and drives it every day. See links.

i could desire to submit an answer approximately how the evil oil companies are stunting the mpg interior the u . s . a . to enlarge income or how individuals are merely wasteful and unthinking who purely desire powerful autos and gas performance be damned...yet that is stupid. there's a plenty extra straightforward clarification in case you seem deeper into it devoid of having preconceptions approximately 'pathetic inefficiency'. the undemanding answer to why the mpg between the U. S. and uk differs is using the fact US gallons are smaller than Imperial (uk) gallons...consequently this is going to use a smaller style of gallons interior the united kingdom to bypass the comparable distance (yet not a lesser quantity of gas). The miles are the comparable. extra or less a million imperial gallon is a million.2 US gallon so miles / gallons = mpg uk 34 / a million = 34 US 34 / a million.2 = 28.33333 voila

The key thing you have to remember is you need enough space to put the batteries, balance the car and be able to haul something, many electrics I have seen have either been pickups, mini vans or station wagons...minimal weight and size isn't what you are looking for.

Ford is bringing back the Edsel to compete with the car being proposed from India at a projected selling price of 2,500. The new Ford Edsel will probably sell for arounf $7,500 and weigh about 1,250 lbs. It is still waiting US gov't safety test approval. If all goes well you will see this car on US streets around spring 2010.
