This happened to me. I went to a birthday party and it turned out to be a Amway sales pitch. I was so mad that I wouldn't sign up if it was free.I felt violated and lied to. I never again spoke to these friends. and a lot of others didn't either. Its a sure fire way to lose friends. Plus I was out the price of a gift.and ,didn't even get any cake. I left before it was cut.

Depends why he was there. After all many people have jobs that other may not approve of. If, however, the party was planned as a sales pitch opportunity then your wife's friend should have made that very clear when issuing invitations.

Was the guy there as a guest or to present a sales pitch?
If as a guest, conversation can be steered in other directions. If as a sales pitch, I would graciously tell my host that I'll be happy to take her to lunch on another day to properly celebrate her birthday, and excuse myself quietly.

If the situation were as it sounds - that she was invited to a "birthday party" and it turned in to a marketing seminar/sales pitch - I would have opened my big ol' mouth, exclaimed how incredibly rude it was of the host to lie to all the guests, and left immediately taking as many of the other guests with me as possible.
That's just wrong wrong wrong!

O.K. I am not sure I understand. Your question was a bit garbled for me.
Your wife was invited to a birthday party and some guy shows up -- to sell something? to get the guests to invest in something? I'm confused.
No matter what- it wasn't a birthday party in the traditional sense. I would be upset and leave.

I would take issue with that so called friend. If she has a great opportunity to share, then there is no reason to lie about the invitation. I might even consider an offense like this a deal breaker to future friendship.

I would leave. Nothing obligates her to sit through a sales pitch to which she was invited under false pretenses. The friend is not much of a friend.

I would feel weird about it.
I guess I wouldn't go to any more "parties" at this person's house -- I would just send my card/gift and always have something else to do.
It has a ring of cheese around it. Pretty bad thing to do.

Was he on the level? Did he jump out of a cake and begin to undress? I have heard about those wild multi level marketing guys.
