My check engine light came on and the diagnositc read the "system is too lean (bank 1)," what does that mean.

means too much air on bank 1. Wrong air/fuel mixture. So this is usually a faulty sensor so into the garage for a diagnosis of which one is a problem. The error will cause you to use more fuel as too lean means not rich enough so more fuel being injected to compensate.
Could be fuel supply problem as well.

Here is what I would look for bad or dirty p.c.v .valve Positive crank case ventilation. or bad or loose gas cap.. on my 01 GMC is what I found after buying 400.00 worth of 02 sensors.

I own a shop, and what I think is this; Bank #1 means there is a problem on that side of the engine. It means something is wrong; such as a sticking injector allowing too much fuel into the engine, a bad spark plug not burning all the fuel, or even a leaking intake gasket on that bank. The most common cause is; an injector that is not closing off all the way due to build up, which allows it to keep putting fuel into the cylinder even after its supposed to be closed off. A vacuum hose that is split where it plugs on, it came off, cracked & leaking, or collapsing for whatever reason. Remove the spark plugs on that bank, and compare the way the electrodes look. Usually the cylinder that is the culprit will be wet looking, or will look different from the rest of the plugs. Listen to the injectors as they fire, and you should be able to hear one that is different sounding. You can use a piece of pipe to listen to them with. A lazy injector can do this, and sometimes you have to replace it with a new or rebuilt injector to resolve the problem. On the cylinder that looks different, you will want to make sure its not a firing problem such as a weak coil before you replace the injector.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

It could be as simple as a vacuum leak but remember if the truck is under 36,000 miles it is still under warranty.
