I got OS X Leopard for Christmas. Can I install this new OS on my iMac bought in 2006?
I have a dual core 2 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM. I want to take advantage of Leopard. Also, I understand that Time Machine requires an additional hard drive and my iMac came with a 400 firewire - not an 800? Any comments appreciated!

I don't see why not. It meets the requirements... Yes you need an external hard drive to use time machine but you can get one that uses firewire 400 or usb so.. go for it.

You need to compare your iMac to the minimum requirements for Leopard which are:
Minimum System Requirements
* • Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
* • 512MB of physical RAM
* • DVD drive for installation
As far as Time Machine, yes you should have an external hard drive. You don't need Firewire 800, most external harddrives that have Firewire are FW400 capable- you just need to research them and see which ones are. Definitely look to make sure the hard drive has the FW400 though - there are lots out there that are USB only - and that will work fine too, but be slower transfer speeds than the FW400. Plus using FW for the hard drive keeps open the valuable USB slots...I never have enough of those.

You can install Leopard on your iMac. Also, I don't think you need a firewire drive to run timemachine. Whenever I plug in my external USB harddrive, it asks me if I want to use timemachine on this drive.
