There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Fhotoace is right. But so is anthony h.

The D40X does not include a sync terminal, which is the usual (corded) way of connecting to studio strobes. This is the least expensive way to do it.

Fhotoace's method is the easy way to do it, because you're unencumbered by cords. It's also a fair amount more expensive.

Anthony h's method attempts to add a sync terminal to the camera. This will work acceptably, even if it's a big dodgy.

keep you funds! The D3000 IS a D40x. comparable sensor, comparable velocity, with a very greater suitable vehicle concentration device. the 1st actual step above a D40x is a sparkling D3100, which has a much greater suitable, greater modern sensor, stay view, and video. Even then, i might suspect that your photos won't strengthen with a D3100. it is particularly helpful to take a place in a sparkling lens as a substitute of a sparkling physique, to enhance your creativity. it is wasteful and intense priced to get a sparkling digital camera physique each and every couple of years. in spite of the shown fact that, lenses are modern for sometimes many years Or, you may desire to spend the money on a street holiday to someplace to take photos, or on a photos path. in case you're taking a type, you will see which you nevertheless have a superbly clever digital camera on your D40x

Fhotoace is mistaken. You don't need to buy a Pocket Wizard. You can simply buy a hotshoe to PC sync adapter. If you're worried about voltage issues (which isn't a problem with newer studio flashes), you can buy a Wein safe-sync or similar product, which has a fuse in it to protect your camera.

For whatever it's worth, I've safely used a cheap $10 hotshoe to PC sync adapter with my D70 and my S1 Pro, neither of which had a PC adapter built-in, with my studio monolights. Nikon even makes one, the AS-15.

And an adapter with a fuse:

1 For single flash, get a hot-shoe to cable adapter

2 For more than one flash, get a radio controlled system (google for them)

You can operate multiple flashes with peanut slaves, but radio controlled is really the way to go.

    Hope this helps.
