Few things the last person is wrong about:
Salary very much depends on the field of law, position in a firm, and locality. It may be as low as 30K a year in some poor localities but many pay a lot more for a PD. Further, the top limit is much more than a few hundred thousand. Personal injury attorneys can easily be millionaires. If you can run your own firm or make partner, you will make a lot more. In fact, if you start out in a big firm in NY or another big city, you will be making well over one hundred thousand a year, plus benefits. However, where you start your job depends on what law school you can get into and how you do (particularly your first yr).
A corporate counsel and public office attorney works generally LESS than other private attorneys, not more, and can be as small as 40-50 hrs a week.
Good luck, be realistic, but reach for the stars

Lawyers make anywhere from about $30K for public defenders to upwards of $200-$300K for partners in large corporate lawy firms.
Minimum education is bachelors' degree (4 yrs) + law school (3 years) for a JD. After grad school, you need to pass the state bar exam, then obtain continuing education (CLE) every year after you graduate.
Corporate lawyers work 60-80 hours per week. Private practice hours may work less
Most lawyers work in comfortable office and court rooms. It's a pretty nice work environment.
I'm a 1st year law student. My husband is a private practice doctor, and after I pass the bar exam, I plan to open a private practice where I can set my own hours.
Law is a very versatile field. a JD can get you into many places in business. Good Luck!
