What is a unique activity for a Father/4-yr-old boy to do in the evening for 3 or so hours?
My wife is hosting a get-together for some friends and it's my job to keep my son and myself away from the house for a few hours.
No skating rinks in town (ice or roller) and I don't really want to go the arcade (Chuck E. Cheese) route. There aren't any good children's movies in the theaters, either.
So far, these all sound like fun ideas. I do want to emphasize that this is the evening. It will be dark. I'm not so sure that kites and walks in the woods would be best at night. Keep the ideas coming, though. I love it.

I would ask him what he wants to get mommy for Christmas and shop for a bit, after all the holidays are right around the corner. Take him for a bite to eat. If you have a garage maybe work on a project together like a tool box for him.

Buy a cheap kite and go to a big hill and fly it, you will both love it!
Or, do you have any woods near you? have a walk in the woods exploring and collecting treasure, throw leaves at each other. Then if there is a cafe nearby go and have a hot chocolate together.
Or take the bus to..anywhere! even better if its double decker. See what places you can find to go to, like parks, shops, a cafe etc. Buy a day ticket so you can get on and off as much as you like.
Have fun x

Turn out all the lights, lay on the floor and play "flashlight tag" on the ceiling.
Grab wood, pipes and other bits from the garage and build a ramp and tunnel maze, so you and he can race cars.
Gather every pillow, blanket and couch coushin in the house an build a fort. Use the flashlights inside.
Wrestle.
With him in it, see how high you can fill the bathtup up.

Take him to the park and do something active with him.
Get a big bouncy ball and roll it around and throw it at each other. He'll have a blast! Let him work off some of that kid energy. Then when you are tired, you can both go get icecream!

If he enjoys making things you could buy a toy from the toy store that isnt assembled yet. Then you two could get McDonalds for dinner or something and build the toy together. And if there's time left over you could take him somewhere he could play with it.

either go to a sporting event ( grammar school bball game) with kids his/her size or age....a museum....or even do a tour of the country side, riding and sight seeing. believe me, time passes quickly doing these things. The most important thing is happening, that is you two having quality time and communication

depending on where you live, is it already to cool to be outside? parks are great! you do a "nature walk" & let him discover different pebbles, pine cones, etc. or visit the library - see if they have any activities that evening.
i hope you find something fun to do!
