I am due to get a new leather settee in a few weeks and would like some ideas to stop my cats scratching it.?
I will put down a scratching post but I have heard that they don't like anything citrus and was wondering if there is a spray which would deter them from this.

Try Pets Behave Training Spray. I got it from Pet City and all you do is put it near to or on any area that you don't want your cats to go. It contains citrus, which cats hate and will keep well away.
Hope this helps.

First, I have found that my cats have absolutely no interest in my leather couch or my husbands suede feeling couch. However, this may not be the case with your felines. There's a spray called Kitty No (I think) that you can purchase at pet stores or even at the grocery store. It has a slight odor but isn't offensive to humans but cat's don't care for it at all so if you use it, your cats should stay away from your new furniture. I have also found that my cats are fond of sisal or cardboard scratching posts or even ones made out of part of a tree with the bark still attached - they are even more interested when the scratching post has catnip rubbed on it.
Oh, be sure to test the spray on a small unnoticeable area of the leather before you spray it all over the couch.

I've had the same experience as Susan G.
My cats were not interested when we brought a leather chesterfield last year.
Maybe its because the material is too taut or the smell? Either way there is no interest from my cats.
However all cats scratch its the way they mark their territory, condition their claws and also because they enjoy it.
If you can let your cats outside they might become less interested, also scratching poles are great my cats love theirs!
Im not sure of any repellent sprays but if they fail you could try filling up a squirt bottle with water and giving them a gentle
spray, they aren't too offended or stressed over this.. they just run off and a minute later are back purring on your lap. good luck

why should the cat scratch it just because its leather.?
Iv got leather and none of my cats give it a second look. They have never touched any furniture,Try putting an old tree branch in your garden they much prefare things like that,Id only use a deterant if and when its needed.otherwise you will deter them from jumping up to sit with you,

We have scratching posts which our cats do use, but the leather suite is a problem - not that they scratch deliberately, but sometimes if they jump up on the arm or back of a chair, it is a very slippery surface. They automatically stick their claws in to stop themselves sliding off.

Buy a cat condo thats got sisel on several columns. It may cost a bit but they will love it and stay away from the leather. You cant put spray on the leather it will mar the finish.Everytime you catch them say no and clap your hands loudly.

my cats spent many happy years wrecking sofas of all varieties, i bought a leather sofa 2 years ago because i had been told cats won't scratch it because its not a good texture for claw sharpening. Well 2 years on and not one of them has ever touched it ( i have 4 cats)
So hopefully you wont have to do anything, fingers crossed!

I've tried the sprays and whilst they're ok they aren't 100%.
I have leather settes and a mad cat so what I did was buy a couple of LARGE bed throws from IKEA (cheap easy and nice) and threw them over the settes and they work a treat!
So my mad minx can do as she please when she jumps up and down them but doesn't get into direct contact with the leather! :)

I use Soft Claws on both my cats. They're easy to put on and they also look really cute. They allow normal stretching and scratching behaviour to continue. Just no damage will occur.
