My wife just lost a cousin to Dengue!

First: Don't give aspirin or ASA!

You can take fluid, rest, and keep mosquitos away to minimize risk to others. For fever something like children's tylenol or acetaminophen is given.

Likely the child would be admitted for monitoring and treatment of symptoms, daily blood work (hematocrit, CBC, pltatlets), and a blood pressure readings. Dengue can result in loss of blood and as a result a blood transfusion is necessary. So the hospital must be able to not only take blood pressure readings but do something about this pretty quickly as children show low blood pressure in the late stages. Most provincial hospitals cannot provide the necessary care, and the child likely should be in a city hospital with 24 doctor, lab work, and a 24 hour blood bank onsite.

Even if you decide not to hospitalize, I'd recoommend that you consider at least taking the child if stable for travel to the city (Manila, Cebu, Davao) etc, and resting there in a relatives house as close to a large hospital as possible. This will give you better 24 hour access to transfusions. If you have a relative nurse have her or him take blood pressures every 8 hours (but you'll need a child cuff) and compare. But since this is a child, daily blood work really is necessary.

If you have enough money and its not a concern for you, then I'd recommend identifying if you or your husband or another relative has matching blood type and have them pre-donate for your specific child to minimize the risk of passing an STD through blood transfusion.

If the child is treated with transfusion(s) when and if necessary, given rest, and fluids, recovery is in two weeks.

Dengue fever is caused by a virus for which no cure of vaccine is available to treat. The methods provided in a medical institution would only treat the symptoms with aggressive care in which most patient do recover. But if you let it go untreated then it is a life threatening.

Beware of anyone trying to sell you anything that promise to cure Dengue. You would be wasting your money and only given falls hope. As much as you don't like to hear me saying "Go to Doctor" I suggest if the child has a high fever to take him/her right away for medical evaluation before its too late to treat him/her.

Wish you the best of luck and God bless!

Increase their vitamin C to help the cell wall integrity thus preventing bleeding and increase fluids such as water or gatorade or fruit juices to prevent dehydration. These are supportive measures during the first stage of dengue in order not to progress to severe state.

2 months ago we had a dengue outbreak in our little city ( i come from Dipolog City), most of the patients are children and most of them are poor who cant afford hospitalization. what our community doctors recommend is to give them a daily drink of "gatas-gatas" its a herbal medication wchich will increase the platelet counts of the dengue infected patient.

    Children can't cure Dengue!

Their brains are not developed enough yet to figure that out.
