Is tipping getting out of hand?

I work in health care and I am not allowed to accept any tips for what I do. I am providing a service as much as anybody else. I am a waitress, housekeeper, and caregiver all in one. Yet I am expected to give up 15-20% of my income to the hairdresser, masseuse, appliance delivery people, pizza boy, maintenance people, etc. So they get to make 15% more than what they are paid, and I get to keep 15% less?

Update:

I should point out that I don't mind tipping for exceptional service, but when I have to pay it even for mediocre service?

Update 2:

Mimi, you'll note that I didn't add waitresses to my list of unnecessary tips. I realize that in most states, the employer can legally pay them sweat shop wages and expect them to make the rest up through tips. I think that ought to be changed so they have to be paid wages equal to other jobs of that type. I do tip at restaurants.

That said, I remember when I was little 10% was more standard, and then it was 15%. Now I get threatened with spit in my food and who knows what else if I don't pony up 20%.

Update 3:

Reap, I work in long term care, and I certainly wouldn't expect the residents of the facility to tip the staff every time we take them to the bathroom or help them with a meal. Nor would I expect the car crash victim in the hospital bed to tip the surgeon lol. It seems ridiculous, doesn't it?

It is getting out of hand. I think as a society we should get rid of tipping all together. When at work people should automatically do their best, why do I have reward something that I as a customer should get in the first place, and that is good service. I think its crap that I go somewhere and pay a lot for a hair cut and color and then the person is expecting me to shell out 15 or 20.00 more for their "great job"

I don't mind tipping waiters and waitresses, because I know they don't make minimum wage, but if they do a crappy job, then that affects what I give them.

Sorry, but I will not tip an airline stewardess or the person who delivers my furniture. What's next...tipping the mailman?

Yes, yes, and yes. And someone always brings up how little they make. I appreciate that this is true, and do always tip 20%. But I still think I shouldn't be expected to know how much you make so I can personally be responsible for suplementing the income your sorry a@@ manager gives you.

What gets me is tipping for good service when what I am paying for IS the service to begin with. I pay $50 to have furniture delivered, and I'm supposed to tip on top of that. I tip 20% on a $130 dye job on my hair when the whole reason I pay that ridiculous amount is supposed to be a good job in the first place.

I lecture for free at times, and do not get a per diem. On just the last day of a trip, I'm expected to pay $ for a hotel maid, $ for the bellhop to stand by my luggage, $ for the doorman to open the door, $ to the cab driver, $ for the skycap, and today I read an article saying to try to tip the stewardess on the airline twice, because they are not allowed to accept the first time. I'm certainly not going to tip for my fricking cup of coffee at the airport. I am going broke trying to suplement everyone else's income, while I do NOT get any tips for my service job (and don't get paid all that great for it either.) WHERE DOES IT STOP??

I think it is because it's become almost mandatory in order to make up for what the cheap business won't pay in wages. I've worked in places where we had to split our tips based on what we should get (whether we got it or not) and give a percentage to the bus boys, dish washers and bartender because the cheap owner didn't want to pay them minimum wage either. They don't even ask what you made in tips either....they tack on 20% as your tip and you are paying taxes on that whether you made it or not....including what you had to give to others.

It has gotten way out of hand when we are already paying a good deal for the service as it is. Heck...I feel bad now. I never knew appliance and delivery people etc. were also expecting tips after I already paid the delivery fee.......

If food establishments would pay their employees properly, waitstaff would not depend upon tips to make a decent living. However, what can I say about other service people who make far more, and yet we are expected to tip them, too?

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but I don't think the answer is in tipping healthcare staff; I think most of the people that we are expected to tip are already making as much (or more) than we are. Having worked in healthcare, I'm with you about the field being all about service, which is why we entered that field in the first place.

TIPS....To Insure Proper Service. Tipping is a voluntary action and should be calculated by the service you recieve. I usually tip 15-20% for very good service, but I have been known to leave a nickel for extremely bad or rude service.

Why would you tip someone who doesnt do a good job? I thought tips were mainly for exceptional service. And if you dont want to feel bad about not tipping someone, it should not be 15%

Yes, I think that tipping should be an option if the person was good at there job. You shouldn't feel obligated. I like to tip the people who are good at their job and dont' expect it.

Tipping should be an option not a have too. I was once told by a car hop that she keeps the silver change as her tip . I have never been back .

Tipping should be for excellent service but not for concept. Just because you hold a title doesn't mean you should automaticaly be entitled to ride a gravy train.

I hear ya. Everywhere you go, someone has a tip jar sitting out and you feel obligated.
