Thankfully as a Canadian I must say that despite travelling throughout the world, my nationality has never been criticized. I'm sorry this happened to you. It's a reflection of the person who criticized, not you, and often a sign of ignorance or the person generalizing a bad trait to all people of that nationality which also isn't fair.

Take it as an opportunity to educate them and show them that there are good people within every nationality. Perhaps ask them what made them say that? Something they heard? saw? read? If you really listen, without getting defensive, you will probably hear a fear of some kind in there. After listening to them, they'll be more inclined to listen to you and have an opportunity to be enlightened.

People who criticize others' nationalities don't always belong to a nationality racists wouldn't criticize

I'm sure some people criticize my nationality, but I pay very little attention, since I didn't particularly choose it. It's rather like someone criticizing the size of my thumb. Meaningless.

Sure do, and they most often get it wrong. I was born American, but my multiracial features means people make assumptions all the time about my being a foreigner, and they nearly always get the wrong nationality.
