What's the difference between "most & most of" "many & many of"?

I think 'Most of' is gramatically correct if you are including "the". Otherwise you'd be saying 'Most people', etc. which is the same. I'd also say that using 'Most of' implies that there is a perceived population, a finite number of people being referred to. For instance

Most people (e.g. a generalization) like chocolate.

vs.

Most of the people (e.g. 'in this house') like chocolate.

When you use "most" or "most of," you are making a statement that you are very confident about.

Most people = much more than 50%!

"Many" sounds less strong to me.

So if you want to make a very bold statement, use "most."

If you want to make a statement, but aren't absolutely sure about the numbers, use "many."

It's all in the context -- the implications of the words.

If I say "most of the people want candy" that means that there is a majority of people who want candy. More than 50% want candy.

If I say "many of the people want candy" that's simply indicating that there are a number of people who want candy. It could be more or less than the majority.

Most the people is not correct.

Many the people is not correct.

You must use "of" if you are going to use "the".

You could leave out "the" and use most people and many people.

If you use "the", you must use "of".

My daughter mixes most and many all the time.

How many coins do you have?

How much money have you?

when you mention specific people then you will use Most of the.... but if you talk in general , you will use most .... with using of and the after most
