Flights to the USA?

You're better off going direct to the airline websites. Try www.abtn.co.uk - there's a section on that site titled "Who flies where" You can put in the exact departure and arrival airports you want to use and ABTN (Air & Business Travel News) will tell you which airlines operate that route. You'll get better prices this way.

We generally go straight to the airline website. Most have special offers on, but you must be ready to take the plunge as the next day the price could have doubled.

This year we got flights with Virgin for £350 in May. We also got less than £250 with Thomsonfly. We opted not to pre-book seats (only 2 of us and get to the airport 3 hours before and you have a good chance of sitting together). We also opted out of their meals and got a 'meal deal' once we got through security.

Virtually everyone else on the plane had done the same (or taken 'packed lunch') so we felt ok about that.

If you have this long of a window then you shouldn't rush in just yet... look at all the alternatives... I assume your coming from the UK if thats the case then remember that flights into various US cities can have monsterous increase/decrease in prices. Don't get hung up on flying into one airport. Even if you have to be in New York that doesn't mean that flying direct will be the cheapest way to get there. You could fly into Logan airport in Boston and then connect to New York on another airline or even by train.

One of the best ways of getting the cheapest flight is to look at it as two completely different trips. One from the UK to a US airport and then One from that airport to where you want to go. If you book it as one trip you will almost always get charged more because the airline thats cheapest from the UK to NY may not be the one that is cheapest from NY to Chicago and lots of sites will keep you on the same airline even if it costs you more.

If its a hub of an airline, try the airline directly. i.e chicago will be United and American
