Hi! Ahh the dilemmas of current internet technologies. Internet has come a long way from just phone lines and the annoying dial-up noises. The way you can connect your Wii would be to pick up a Wireless Internet Router. These routers are readily available at your local electronics store. I recommend Best Buy because if you are not entirely sure of how to connect them, then their partners at Geek Squad can help you out. I recommend the brand names Netgear and Linksys. Now, a wireless router isn't much more than a converter and you hook an internet line into the back of it and it turns the same internet in your computer into a wireless signal that can be picked up in any part of your house. Wireless internet usually only works with cable, DSL, or broadband internet. Also, the Wii isn't very compatible with Dial-up either, so if you are still one of the few who has dial-up and wants to use their Wii's internet capabilities, consider upgrading. The router just sits right on your desk and it has a VERY small footprint so it's not so big and bulky. They cost from somewhere between $60-$90 Now, once you have your wireless router hooked up, turn on your Wii. On the Wii Menu, click the button in the bottom left-> click Wii Settings-> Scroll to the 2nd screen-> Click internet-> then it will give you a few simple choices, eventually just pick wireless connection and the Wii will scan your area for wireless connections and then click the one you installed and your hooked up! Also, an added bonus is that if you have a fairly new laptop computer, then you can use the wireless capabilities with your computer, too.
Alternatively, if you do not want to get a wireless router, then you would have to bye a USB-Internet Connecter made for the Wii. I'm not 100% sure of where you can get this piece of equipment but, Google it. But, once you have it, I believe you hook up the Internet cord to one side and a USB to the other and it converts it.
Yes, to go on the Wii Shop Channel is free. But you would have to purchase other things, like a Web Browser Channel or Virtual Console games.
Hope this helped. Good luck!

The online features are free on the Wii, except for the Internet Channel browser, which is 500 Wii points ($5.00 USD). You can download that from the Wii Shop in the Wii Ware section.
You will need an internet connection for this of course. If you don't have a wireless connection, you'll need a wireless router to connect to, or Nintendo's USB WiFi adapter.
