Why is it called 'Underwear' for males and 'Panties' for females?

I think all underthings can be described as underwear. The word 'Panties', however originates from 'Pantaloons'. Pantaloons are long legged, (Knee-length), undies often worn by much older Ladies. They have been around for quite some time and i believe they were the first form of underwear as we know it today.

As time passed by they became shorter and smaller, i.e. Pantaloon >Pants>Panties.

Personally, I think it's because underwear for men are never cute, they're just plain with nothing interesting about them, but for women, their underwear is always cute, or fancy, so they call them panties.

its not. underwear/undergarments/under-clothing can be for either guy or girl. just means what you wear underneath ^_^
