Do I need to copyright my artwork before putting it on display?

I am going to put picutres of some of my painting and poetry I wrote up on my webspace, do I need to copyright it, or do i already own the rights because I created it? Also what if I put on myspace where more people will have access to it?

If so how do I go about getting it copyrighted?

Update:

I didn't think I could publish it unless I was a student. Never went to school for art, self taught. Maybe look for another place to publish it, like art publication in my area?

Update 2:

er...make that I didn't think I could publish it in a student paper unless I was a student.

No, you have the assumed copyright as long as it IS original work. If it is in anyway a partial or complete copy of another artist work even different mediums you CAN get into trouble with the original artist. if he or she were to ever see your copy'd work. To protect youself keep a log of your work, and either make a catolog code (marked on back of piece) and complete description of it. But the best is to obtain an actual copyright from the U.S Library of Congress, they can assist you free of charge!. Or go through the U.S. Pantent office, but this could get expensive, I have encountered these problems myself. Good luck and Get your work out there any way you can, get seen and known. Enjoy it. You owned the rights as soon as you created it. The only thing you would need to worry about is being able to prove that you are the original creator if someone did try to take credit for your work. Publishing your art, even in a student newspaper or something like that would solve the problem.

You automaticly have the copyright, if you want to make it "official", you can always file with www.copyright.gov

I would place your name or business name, or just "Protected by Copyright" across any photo that you put on the internet, just as a deterrent against idea theft.

    Best of Success!

You automatically have copyright protection as the creator of any original artwork.

It's already yours, but there may be reasons you want to officially do it also. Google a bit about copyright laws and you'll find tons of info.

Guys, it's yes or no question.

No, you don't need to copyright your work before displaying, as long as it has a signature =)
