A software-free method for connecting 2 Computers with USB cable?

Use a USB crossover cable, and you should be able to create a new windows serial port network connection.

It is advisable to use a LAN cable and a network port or modem. If you want to use USB you will have to buy a USB exchanger which are available at a computer store. Like a modem but can connect many computers with USB.

If they've both got LAN sockets that is 100% the easiest and fastest method to use. It really is easy using the Network setup wizard.

You dont need a router just a crossover CAT5 cable from any computer shop.

Can you plug both computers into your router? Wireless may not work, but I'd be willing to bet you've got an ethernet plug on both computers - two cables, each computer to the router, you have a network, and go from there. Without that working, I've heard of ethernet directly to another computer, but I'm not sure how to do that (since our router is functional, and my computer is wireless anyway)

Never heard about connecting two PCs with a USB cable. You may however, use a UTP cross cable (network), or Blue Tooth USB Dongles or Infrared USB Dongles to connect the PCs

How about a USB crossover transfer cable, and the before mentioned Wizard?

If you use the cable method, which works fine, you can do it with a cross over network cable. You will need to set up a local workgroup.
