Are there Any other Animal Females that have a Hymen?
I know some of the Great Apes/Primates have Menstruation, but I've never seen any Information on Hymens. I was Wondering if Humans were differentiated from other Animals by this Feature.
I would assume, by Darwinian Evolution, it's Function is Protection from Infection(if Someone knows Better, Please tell), until Used, and thus would be Advantageous. Perhaps Unique, since Humans walk Upright, the Area might be more Exposed than other Species.
If this is Unique to Humans it could give Intelligent Design some Evidence of their Own.
If Anyone has a Link to a Mature Answer, Please List it.....Understand my Searches on this have Produced 1.6 Million sites, so far None are..ummm...Scientific.
(Please-Mature, Factual answers....and no Debates on Evolution vs. Creationism, Thanks!)
Big Hugs!
Thank you, Those were Both Great Answers! Hard to pick one Best! I never thought of Fetal Developement, and the Diverse Animal lines. Primates, like the Lemur, I could see, With the Liquid Protection, the Aquatics make sense. The Llama and the GuineaPig are odd. I'll have to look into this More, but you Both gave me some Good Directions! I have to Choose the First, as the Link includes some the Information the 2nd gave....But the 2nd gave me More to Think about Immediately!

So far, I have found "fin whales", "toothed whales" and promisians (lemurs- etc)
Many animals have the vagina so shrunken as to prevent intercourse until hormonally ready (without a hymen).

The entire purpose of the hymen ends at birth. All it does is prevent, to a degree, the amount of amniotic fluid that gets up into the vaginal and uterine tract, largely because much of the fluid is comprised of the fetus' own urine.
The hymen is notoriously weak. Most of the time, it is ruptured to some degree if not totally long before a girl is ready for sex. It can break from anything that causes some stretching of that area.
Humans and most other primates are born with hymens. Other animals include the llama, guinea pig, manatees, moles, elephants, rats, toothed whales, seals and horses.
