I bought a Snugli one not the 'bohemian' looking one and it was around $20. It did make breastfeeding more comfortable, but just get a blankie and a safty pin. Its works the same. The baby grows up so fast they dont want to lay down in the slings. Also try ebay to get one for a heck of a lot cheaper.

They are definitely worth it. Not just for breastfeeding (I never used mine that way), but they make like easier in that you can hold your baby and have your hands free. My son stayed in a baby carrier almost all day for the first month or so. He would even nap there while I walked around doing housework, etc. We didn't even need the stroller for about 6 months, because I carried him in a pouch or Mei Tai everywhere we went. Great for colicky or high-needs babies, and they definitely promote secure attachment.
You can often by used baby carriers for alot less money. If you go to thebabywearer.com, there is a forum where people are selling used slings, pouches, etc. for less than retail. Some people also make them and sell them on ebay for cheap.
I highly recommend Hotslings or Mei Tai asian baby carriers.

Oh they are so so so worth it. Try Ebay though, I got my Maya wrap for only $24
Also, if there are any consignment shops in your town, they sometimes have them.
Not only for nursing in public, but for keeping baby up with you, while making your hands free for other things (shopping bags, pushing the cart at the grocery store, holding the hand of your sweetie, washing dishes.
There is research that shows babes who were brought up in arms are more independent. I have five kids and "wore" them for around a year each. Once they could walk, they were so independent.
My friend's litte one is constantly whining "Mommy, hold me" and she's over two years old, the child weights over 30 pounds. My 2 yr old got enough of that when she was a baby, so she never asks. AND- I have absolutely no flab on my arms!
I recommend the Maya Wrap with smaller babies and the Moby wrap when you're ready to try something exotic and complicated and SUPER comfortable. I wore my Moby wrap with a 22 pound kid for over 6 hours, walking at the zoo and had no back pain because it is so comfortable.
The Maya wrap has the Brass rings, is very adjustable, but PLEASE watch the video, so you know where the comfort points of adjusting it are, otherwise you'll wear it wrong (I see it at the mall 90% of moms who use it) and end up with neck and shoulder pain.

I have one I found on www.cortezandco.com and I love it. It is one piece fabric and DD loved to snuggle in there. My sis-in-law has one that she used til her daughter was almost a year old. I don't know if it made breastfeeding in public easier, but I had a drape that helped a lot! It snapped around my neck and had like mesh at the neck so I could see the baby and it just looked like a shawl.

My son didn't like the sling much until he figured out he could nurse in it. Then I could take him anywhere and go anywhere and he could sit in there, nurse in there, and sleep in there!
Other advantages: if the baby falls asleep in it, it's fairly easy to put him down, and slowly back out of it w/o waking them up. Most other baby carriers are hard to wiggle out of without waking the baby.
There are also lightweight and easy to stuff into a bag or something. If your baby gets wiggly and wants out, it's no big deal to keep the sling on and carry the baby outside of it.

Yes, it's worth it. Baby slings are awesome!
However, if you don't have the $40-60, you can find free patterns for them on the internet and make your own! They are fairly easy to make.

Personally, my daughter hated being in the sling. But then she fought being swaddled, so being confined in a sling was not happening.
I also have the Moby Wrap and I love it. I can use it in many ways.

I havent used mine yet, but I paid about $3 for the fabric. I found an awesome website for sewing your own... VERY easy.... just cut a straight strip, make a little cut, sew a good sturdy seam, and its done!
:-P And I thought I had the link for you to look at, if you are a sewing person, but cant find it.

I recieved a baby bjorn for my shower and thought I never would use it. Then my child became colic. It was the only thing that would comfort him and allow me to get ANYTHING done (Dishes, Laundry, ect) Buy a cheaper one - why pay more for something he/she will not want to be in after 7 or so months? Best Wishes.
