would cutting down the rain forest ...?

and replacing it with farmland solve world hunger?

Update:

i took geography. and there is alot of rain forest out there and with our advanced farming methods we should get a strong surplus of food.

a lot more than not using ethonal would get us.

Update 2:

all the grass and vegetables we plant will prevent droughts, global warming and most of the other effects of cutting it down.

we don't know for sure if the rainforest has any cures. we do know that it contains alot of diseases though.

Update 3:

98% of the worlds oxygen comes from the ocean. besides our crops will make up for that oxygen lost.

Update 4:

5% of the world is alot of farmland.

Update 5:

the diseases will die out once we eliminate their home.

Update 6:

you can never have enough food.

One thing that nobody mentioned is that the soil of rain forests is extremely poor. All the nutrients are in the vegetation, so if you cut down the rain forest, the land becomes a virtual desert. Crops do not grow well, if at all, in land that was formerly occupied by rain forests. This has happened many times in Central America and other places with tropical rain forests.

I would come up with any alternative to such environmentally damaging way to save the world from hunger. Maldistribution, of funds, misuse of land areas etc, would be something to want look into changing. Redirecting water into desert lands, irrigating lands, and growing crops in multiple height levels, Growing foods in ocean, and freshwaters in the form of hydroponics. If we, the people , really wanted to stop world hunger, we really could without too much effort. Water is a major factor. There is so much unused land out there waiting to be irrigated and fruitful, thus also helping to increase the o2 level in the atmosphere as well. The rain forest are precious.

And it would not only be criminal to touch them, but also have devastating effects. Once they are gone we'll have lost a whole lot more than a few trees. Why don't u order the planet earth dvd on www.PEdvd.org? Or, if u have satellite TV, watch the planet earth series on TV. U'll be amazed at all the beauty the earth has to offer. But, your concern for the hungry , is greatly appreciated, but I'm afraid the hunger, is caused more by ignorance and greed. We just need to change the way we do things. The possibilties are many, if there wern't people out there fighting the efforts that some are trying to make.

Your question is filled with inaccuracies, and so it's hard to answer correctly.

There is no proof that the rainforest contains any medicianal cures?!? Only about EVERY one we have ever found.

Disease would be eliminated if we eliminate their home?!? Honestly sounds like a 5th grader kind of statement.

The oxygen part, you would break even. Cutting down all of the rainforest and replacing it with other vegetation would mostly do that. But then you would have to remove a bunch of farms somewhere to plant trees to replace the lost wood we need.

Actually, the soil in rain forests is pretty crappy, because the decomposition and uptake by plants is so quick that there's not much left in the soil.

Agriculture set up after clearing doesn't do very well. Natives of such places clear a patch, grow a few veggies for a couple of years and then move on.

    So:

    1. no, it wouldn't solve hunger,

    2. most of the world's hunger is poor distribution, NOT lack of food

    3. clearing rain forests would make Global Warming much worse.

The world is not really hungry, many African nations have very fertile land... Exemple: banana, coconut, coco and many more grow in African nations, but guess what, WE are buying most of those, leaving them with the scrap...

Cutting down rain forest will be like stripping the Earth from his lungs... We have more evidences today that proves that forest density did have a climatic influence and we still don't quite understand how it works...

Also, rain forest arbor many new plants, that can help develop cures for diseases like cancer and aids, so cutting everything will be like destroying a living pharmacy that could save even more lifes!

And the last but not the least, tropical rain forest don't only have new plant species, but also hide some very unique and dangerous pathogen agents (new diseases), that very few humans have encounter and very few could succeed in fighting it in case of contamination. So cutting such forest, will increase the odds that we may find such rare disease, that in turn could kill millions... Aids was one of those, living in jungles, Ebola virus is one too... Now you know that they are not jokes!!

The most likely result of cutting all of the rain forest would be widespread drought and climate change. Rain forests are very important in the overall climate control mechanism of earth. Cut them all down to use as crop land is thus counterproductive.

Currently, rain forests ARE being cut at a tremendous rate. We are likely to see the results in coming years. Along with other factors creating global warming.

no. because you know a lot of people are hungry not only because or a lack of arable land but also because global economics tends to force poor nations to become even poorer. Also the rain forests produce tons of oxygen and reduce carbon dioxide way more than farm land could, and thta is not something to be taken lightly when climate change due to global warming is already upon us

we actually already have enough food to feed the world...the problem is in the distribution. As of 7:30PM today, we could have fully funded global anti-hunger efforts with the money put into the Iraq conflict for 17 years. And that number is only going to get bigger. the amount of wheat it takes to feed a cow to get one steak (so that's the amount of wheat fed to the cow divided by the number of steaks it produces) could feed 12 people for a day. So that one meal for one person really has enough energy for feed 12 people for a whole day. Maybe it's our eating habits we need to look at...humans didn't evolve to eat red meat (most quadraped animals), as seen from our extremely long digestive system, which is very similar to a herbivore's. Carnivores have very short alimentary canals so that they absorb the protein from the meat, but the excrete the rest before they absorb the fat. Us on the other hand, have very long intestinal tracts, where all of the fat gets absorbed, and the meat in turn actually begins to rot in one's colon. Also, humans need special bacteria in their colon to digest red meats. I don't eat red meat (though i do eat things such as birds and fish, which aren't red meat and humans are more adapted to eat), and if i tried to eat red meat now, i'd get sick because of my lack of these bacteria. So the whole world hunger problem isn't about lack of resources, it's about misuse of resources. Cutting down the rainforest? definite misuse of resources...especially when we rely so heavily on rainforests to absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, something humans don't do so well without...

no! if you cut down the rain forest you would kill 1000's of animal species... replacing it with crops would do nothing. people need to eat meat too. we would only be adding to the world hunger issue by cutting down the rain forest. also, there IS NOT alot of rain forest left in the world. hardly even 5% of the world is made up of the rain forest.

it is particularly undesirable. You wasted thousands and thousands of timber to make decks. The rain woodland is domicile to tones of animals. And the timber positioned oxygen into the air. various animals are in dangered simply by fact human beings cut back down the timber. yet whats performed is finished. you may no longer substitute it now. there is no component in feeling responsible approximately it. yet do in no way do it lower back! somewhat if i replaced into you, i might purchase some rain woodland decrease back and not do something to it. That way human beings can no longer purchase it and strengthen it.
